Homeward Bound
Peter And Gordon Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm sitting in the railway station.
Got a ticket to my destination.
On a tour of one-night stands my suitcase and guitar in hand.
And ev'ry stop is neatly planned for a poet and a one-man band.
Homeward bound,
I wish I was,
Homeward bound,
Home where my thought's escaping,
Home where my music's playing,
Home where my love lies waiting
Silently for me.
Ev'ry day's an endless stream
Of cigarettes and magazines.
And each town looks the same to me, the movies and the factories
And ev'ry stranger's face I see reminds me that I long to be,
Homeward bound,
I wish I was,
Homeward bound,
Home where my thought's escaping,
Home where my music's playing,
Home where my love lies waiting
Silently for me.

Tonight I'll sing my songs again,
I'll play the game and pretend.
But all my words come back to me in shades of mediocrity
Like emptiness in harmony I need someone to comfort me.
Homeward bound,
I wish I was,
Homeward bound,
Home where my thought's escaping,
Home where my music's playing,
Home where my love lies waiting

Silently for me.
Silently for me.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Peter And Gordon's song Homeward Bound depict the journey of a musician who is tired of travelling and performing in one-night stands. The singer of the song is sitting alone in the railway station with his suitcase and guitar, waiting for the train that will take him to his destination. He is also longing for his home, where he could escape from the endless stream of cigarettes and magazines, the monotonous towns, and the strange faces he encounters on his travels.

He is a poet and a one-man band, someone who is always on the move and never has the opportunity to settle down. The lyrics are a reflection of the loneliness and frustration that he feels as he embarks on yet another journey. The repetition of the phrase "homeward bound" highlights the singer's longing to return home, where he can reunite with his loved ones and take a break from his travels.

Overall, the lyrics to Homeward Bound explore the contrast between the excitement of travelling and the need for human connection and a sense of belonging. The singer is torn between his love for music and the monotony of travelling, and the song is a reminder that even the most ambitious and independent individuals need a home to feel fulfilled.
