Young
Peter Bjørn And John Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Your mother's eyes look straight through me
Whenever we meet
Your father swears it'll never be
As long as he breaths

And how many times have they told you
That you're too young
How, how I've ached to hold you
But you're too young

If we don't buy what's right or wrong
Then we are sinners
We were never two to tag along
But we were always winners

And how many people, have told you
That you're too young
And how many jealous hands would love to hold you
Cause you're too young

Well you're too young to love me
And I'm too old for you
At least that's what they tell us
It's in their book of rules
That you're too young, too young baby you're too young

We could try it for a while

But they'd get us in the long run
They say that you're too young, baby you're too young

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Peter Bjørn And John's song "Young" reflect on the challenge of a love affair between an older person and a younger person. The opening lines suggest that the older lover has met the younger lover's mother, but feels that she does not approve of the relationship. The father is even more overtly against the affair, swearing that it will never happen, even as long as he is alive. The chorus reflects on the constantly-reiterated message that the younger lover is too young to love the older lover, and the older lover is too old for the younger lover. The older lover reflects on how badly they have wanted to hold the younger lover, suggesting that this is a love that goes beyond how society might judge them.

The second verse suggests that the couple has been judged as "sinners" for defying social norms and that they are being condemned according to narrow views of right and wrong. They realise they are not the type of people to "tag along" with the crowd, but that they have always been "winners". The chorus repeats the idea that people tell the younger lover she is too young to be with the older lover and how many of those people might secretly wish they were in the older lover's place. The song finishes by acknowledging that they could try to ignore the perceived wisdom that the younger lover is too young, and give their relationship a chance, but that ultimately, the condemnation of society would catch up with them.

Lyrics:
If I told you things I did before
Told you how I used to be
Would you go along with someone like me?
If you knew my story word for word
Had all of my history
Would you go along with someone like me?

I did before and had my share
It didn't lead nowhere
I would go along with someone like you
It doesn't matter what you did
Who you were hanging with
We could stick around and see this night through

And we don't care about the young folks
Talkin' 'bout the young style
And we don't care about the old folks
Talkin' 'bout the old style too
And we don't care about their own faults
Talkin' 'bout our own style
All we care about is talking
Talking only me and you

Usually when things has gone this far
People tend to disappear
No one will surprise me unless you do

I can tell there's something goin' on
Hours seems to disappear
Everyone is leaving I'm still with you

It doesn't matter what we do
Where we are going to
We can stick around and see this night through

And we don't care about the young folks
Talkin' 'bout the young style
And we don't care about the old folks
Talkin' 'bout the old style too
And we don't care about their own faults
Talkin' 'bout our own style
All we care about is talking
Talking only me and you

And we don't care about the young folks
Talkin' 'bout the young style
And we don't care about the old folks
Talkin' 'bout the old style too
And we don't care about their own faults
Talkin' 'bout our own style
All we care about is talking
Talking only me and you

Talking only me and you

Talking only me and you
Talking only me and you

God...

I remember I used to get annoyed at my mom when I was 7 in 2009. I used to get so annoyed at my mom, as she loves this song, and played it all the time. I miss those days. Take me back....

Take me back to a time when I was young, carefree, when I played with my neighbors in and around the neighborhood. When I was in elementary school, playing on the playground. When.. when I was a kid.

Now I'm working a job, almost done with high school, and came across this song In my recommendations on my break. Nostalgia just hit me like a wave when I heard it that familiar drum and whistle.

Take me back.
