Rainbow Connection
Peter Cincotti Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And what's on the other side?
Rainbows are visions, but only illusions
And rainbows have nothing to hide
So we've been told and some choose to believe it
I know they're wrong, wait and see
Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection
The lovers, the dreamers and me
And what do we think we might see?
Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection
The lovers, the dreamers and me
All of us under its spell. We know that it's probably magic
Have you been half asleep and have you heard voices?
I've heard them calling my name
Is this the sweet sound that called the young sailors
The voice might be one and the same
I've heard it too many times to ignore it
It's something that I'm supposed to be
Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection
The lovers, the dreamers and me
The lyrics to Peter Cincotti’s song “Rainbow Connection” make an intriguing commentary on the nature of belief and dreaming. The lyrics inquire why there are so many songs about rainbows and wonders what’s on the other side of them. We are told that rainbows are mere illusions that hide nothing. Although some choose to believe this, the singer knows that they are wrong and that one day we’ll find the “rainbow connection” that brings together “the lovers, the dreamers and me”. There is something amazing about the possibility of discovering this connection that keeps us looking upward and searching for what it means. The song speaks to the universal human longing to believe in something beyond the mundane and the desire to find meaningful connections in life.
The lyrics of “Rainbow Connection” are both whimsical and profound at the same time. Through a simple inquiry about rainbows, they comment upon the nature of longing and belief, and the universal human experience of star-gazing and dreaming. The rainbow connection serves as a symbol for the possibility of transcendent connections with others, and the deep sense of magic that inhabits our lives if we remain open to it.
