The man on the ladder coming up from the sewer with his hunchback and the lantern was one of if not my favorite painting. The tender hope ( I thought ) on his face as he left his toil and headed for home and possible love. His own lantern becoming visible behind him yet light from somewhere acknowledges the face distinguishing it.

I have lost my unconscious eye presently through binging internet images and socials like Insta. Drug dependence has also played a part in this blindness. My dreams are all real life scenarios that revolve around work and failure to complete tasks before a special visit. The message is pretty clear for me. I am an artist at heart, a dreamer being crushed beneath my fear of life, I’m always in turmoil or drudgery. I do my best to be kind and curious. I hope to transcend this grey prison like this guy did.

I'll give completely different 'advice': change Your environment , move - to the countryside, whatever the loss of comfort - and see how things start 'to speak' and mean something, again.

Cities are designed to instrumentalize the nature of man into the machine of secular and industrial 'progress' - the only image that can come up is despair about the rationalizing delusions, necessary to subsist in that environment.

@Christoph Mahler Yeah you shouldn't live in a city, for sure. I would give similar advice, if you are trying to be an artist you are going to get way better living at campgrounds, being frugal, and learning how to draw from life, rather than going to art school or whatever.

Also, lots of 'artist ethics' are very upper-class: buy from local art stores, travel to big cities, maintain a rich night life, etcetera.

Buy from the place you get the best deals, big cities and travel take time and rest away from practice, and alcohol liquidates your brain and wastes your most productive hours (evening and morning).

"At the Door" reminds me of a recurring nightmare I had when I was 10. For seven nights, I woke in my dream, walked downstairs and saw a shadowy figure just standing in the living room. Every night he got a little closer and every night I got more and more scared, just waiting for him to make a move. On the sixth night, I was tired of living in fear of going to sleep so I asked my mom what I should do. "Ask him what he wants," she said. I hadn't even realized that was an option. On the seventh night, I asked the shadowy figure, with vitriolic anger mixed with fear, “What do you want from me?!” He vanished. I still get chills on occasion when recalling the emotion from then. The fear. The anger. The Relief.

In my nightmares I never ask what the antagonist wants....instead I react slowly to the fear and go into analyzing what is happening....my mind is always going and so the fear is minimized by the slow realization of what is happening.

Almost all of his paintings have a dark background. I believe that every time he was to begin a new painting, he would first paint the canvas a pure black, which, to me, means that all his paintings are indeed sprouting from the darkness of his unconscious. Although neurosis wasn't mentioned even once in this video, I believe that the recurring theme of the split man represents his neurosis and that of every other adult in his lifetime and ours. Even this man, who was sharply tuned to his greater self, or The Great Man, only began to heal from his neurosis in his late period, which goes to show how unlikely it is to develop an ego that isn't neurotic in modern times. Whatever it is we are moving towards as a species is going against the deepest and most rooted nature of the human animal. We can only heal from this global neurosis once we start seeing ourselves not as a unit, but as duality, while simultaneously giving in to the multiplicity of the unconscious manifestations. Since such a task is so tremendously terrifying, only a handful of people are likely to begin this process, and will only gain significance in the larger scheme of things once we cross some terrible milestone of crisis, when the fear of not giving in to the unconscious is greater than that of resisting it.

As an artist in crisis, unable to make art for a myriad of living conditions, this is very helpful and the paintings provide inspiration, comfort, understanding. I greatly appreciate the analysations which flesh out the meanings in a way that makes sense and speaks to the unconscious for me. It helps me to begin to allow myself to go into my unconscious again. Even outside of making art, they bring comfort in a way that is very needed right now, with political conditions crushing the masses.

I woke up from a dream where I saw the same figure from the painting “the outcast”. Except instead of holding a rainbow it was enveloped over the suit he was wearing. I recorded the dream when I woke up because I also like to paint and thought if I ever become skilled enough that it would be a powerful painting. The hair on my arms stood up when I saw it.

I had never heard of Birkhäuser prior to watching this, so thank you for sharing his story and works. It never ceases to amaze me how Jung's ideas seem to knit together so many different cultures across the world and the ways in which they seek spiritual meaning and enlightenment or 'resurrection' of the consciousness. I experience incredibly vivid dreams and conscious dream-visions myself and have found Jung's theories immensely helpful in analysing my own psychological landscape to divulge meaning and inspiration from these occurrences.

This is one of the most precious videos I've ever watched. Some paintings give me deja vu, perhaps because my unconscious mind recognizes them. Also, interpretation of depression giving us new opportunities struck me, as I made the correlation with Taleb's Black Swans and with my personal observation that the unconscious mind is Extremistan - the realm were Black Swans show up. Of course, Black Swans can be positive and negative.

I hope I will never forget these feelings I have right now... Thank you a ton for your video(s)!

I have so many compliments and gratitude for this channel. From the very basics that the narrator voice is clear and soothing at the same time. Also the visual images added to material ❤🎉 I don’t get to enjoy the visual effects when I listen at work. This channel has helped me understand what Carl Jung was doing. In 12 step literature he is mentioned only briefly in the experience of Roland Hazard. I think it’s a strange coincidence of humorous sorts that his final book was called the red book and 12 step have their blue book 😂

This ist great! I had the luck to live in Peter Birkhäuser's house and work in his studio for several years. As we moved in the original paintings (as seen in your video) were just standig and hanging around without protection. I asked a friend of mine to build a penderie for them so they are safe now. I have not crossed paths with this soul previously. His representations of the complexities of the conflict (?) between our concious and unconcious life are unparalleled. They bring form to emotion and spiritual knowledge. I'm still processing, as I type, as if a weight is being lifted. My own "journey" of awakening has, so far, been largely a lonely one, briefly connecting with individuals along the way. This man has, through his art, made sense of much of my life on so many levels.

Regarding the painting 'Imprisoned Power' (12:45), I feel that it's important to note that the mountain veey much resembles a brain. This interpretation fits with your thoughts about the subject, that the beast represents creativity.
In this interpretation, the to ty man running away could be interpreted as our lives in a social capacity - after all, both creativity and our lives outside of art require commitment. Of course, it's possible to juggle the two and achieve a healthy balance, but clearly, this situation isn't such an example.
In this case, the tiny man fleeing from the mountain can be interpreted as the person this brain belongs to trying to shift their energy from their social lives to either trying to contain the eruption of creativity, or preparing fo it (ie telling their friends not to worry about them in the coming week because they will be in a creative haze, lol).

My one dream that has stuck with me happened as a child, in it I fell backwards into a huge electrical bush of light, I was scared it would electrocute me, but it enveloped me completely in a soft loving embrace before I woke up. Answer: There is (always) one element in each painting that has a definitive starting point. And those “starting points” are brighter and more defined.

Then he looks for how or what he can attach to it.

Simply incredible paintings. I feel connected to the work since I do a lot of meditation that produces vivid inner visualizations. There are innumerable worlds and beings one can encounter deep in the altered states of consciousness, but most people aren't brave enough to find them let alone face them. This artist had real courage.

Like if someone is afraid of spiders do you think they want to meditate on facing gigantic spiders in their own mind so they can confront their own inner issues? If you can reach deep levels of meditation it is very close to a dream like state where things seem "real" and present in that moment.

got my first Jung book, an old copy of man and his symbols a little while back, as well as some Camus plays, works by Freud, and various classical books on philosophy. I've also been long interested in Lovecraft and lucid dreaming. I found this channel not long after; it has been a great companion piece as I delve deeper into the subject matter. I still need to get something by Samuel Beckett. watching your video on waiting for godot renewed my interest in seeking it out.

That split man is an imagination of myself that it why it came to him too. I have felt like two separate parts of what was once one whole. I thought it might be because i had a bad head injury, but i began to feel a sense of monstrousness perfectly surmised by his picture. Simply amazing to relate to.

Wow that documentary of a Painter was so different it almost had its own atmosphere. Everything about it felt Nostalgic. I believe it is the stories of painters like these that keep the Mystery and great intrigue existing.

This is VERY close what my dreams look like the darkness and the light-type figures and things that glow.
Its nearly there. I think layers of paint on glass would really make these look even closer to how they do in dreams. it's a depth and light that is not one-dimensional. This makes me want to create more dream art.

I had almost the exact same image as “Alarm” ( 16:59) appear to me in my active imagination before sleep the other night. The only differences were that we were in a Roman villa instead of outer space, and instead of beating on a door, she was trying to expand beyond the ceiling, staring directly at me with hate-filled eyes. The placement was nearly the same - she was on the right, but top right, as she was growing upwards, and the two circles of light appeared on the floor (bottom left) behind her.

What does it mean? Who is the shadow woman? What are the circles of light? What is the structure that my “shadow woman” was dying to get out of, and Birkhäuser’s was desperate to enter?

Wonderful format for an artist documentary.....I perfect mix of biography and work. Most art documentaries focus on the person, and simply glaze over the actual work itself.....which is the reason that we are interested in the person at all. Very well done.
