I was in the Household Cavalry, Life Guards Regiment - And I can confirm most of this.. I used to wear a pair of knee high boots, that if someone annoyed me, I would carry out drill movments in a hope that my boots would hit them and move them. Standing on White Hall & occasionally going to Buck Palace I was bored sooo often, especially late at night when everything shuts down and it just me and the silence of St James Park... I was always really excited to get a stag on horseback as opposed to on foot. we used to do 2 hours on 4 hours off.. 2 hours is REALLY REALLY hard standing around doing nothing, with rock solid boots with no soles/souls, a sward and scabbard, and a helmet that really was not very comfortable whatsoever..

I collapsed on the state opening of parliament in 2005 - standing around for 2 hours, in stupid heat with barely tailored cermonial kit (I only just joined the regiment). It happened just as the Queen arrived at the staircase I was guarding. crazy experience, oh and because of that faint, I was fined on my wages - and punished with what we called a 'beasting' - my PT Instructor who carried out these beastings was Craig Harrison - The famous sniper.. I tell you, he was not a very nice guy in our regiment. We called him corporal Trench.

That's very interesting! Didn't know if it was true about being deducted in wages for things like that. Thanks for confirmation. Can I ask a question - what if tourist don't listen, and they persist you annoy, even after a gun has been pointed? Is there a panic button? And are the huts for display, or can the guard stand in there when it's raining. I imagine it would restrict the view

The Infantry Side of the Blue Red Blue were at Buckingham Palace, not sure if they were armed and ready.. I thought they carried 5 rounds on them at all times on sentry duty. thats as best as I can offer..

and yes you do get docked wages.. I was docked for being drunk on my final adjudants inspection, and missed parade a few times. Craig Harrison was my PT Intructor who beasted me many times for poor performance.. He now holds the record for the longest sniper kill.. he's a tough nut who can really punish people HARD...

They are serviceman. They're serving soldiers in the British Army, usually Infantryman or Cavalry. A lot of the blokes on duty will have served in Afghanistan or Iraq or both.

Apologies if this offends anyone, but I think that some (not all) Americans need to respect the fact that we do things a lot differently in the UK. This may not be all of the time, but it is most common that American tourists joke / mess around with the guards, especially if this is a first time visiting. I remember I was visiting London to watch a play (I’m British) and there was an American kid talking to his mother, and he told her he was going to approach the guards. Me and my cousin said: 'If I were you I wouldn't do that. You don't want to learn it the hard way!' The kid ran away and I distinctly remember a guard glancing at me in relief.
These people need more respect.

I'm pretty sure the bear hats have something to do with the Norman Conquest of England. When Rollo the Walker, first King of the Normans, translated texts from Scandinavian languages, one particular translation is the word for "cavalerie", in English; "Knight". In Nordic, he noted this word to be "Berserkr", "Ber" meaning "Bear" and a "Serk" being a type of cloak that was draped over the shoulders. The r at the end is similar to the english -er, signifying a person who performs an action surrounding the topic, with the full translation amounting roughly to; "Person who wears a bear skin". It seems that the people in "Viking" society that were equivalent to "Knights" in France, a role in their society known as Huscarl and being the personal guard of a Jarl, were awarded bear skin cloaks, either in recognition of their service or to signify clearly that they are a royal guard, or perhaps both. Several generations later, Rollo's descendent William the Conquerer landed in East Engla and would begin the campaign that would have him conquering and uniting all of England under a single rule, Norman Rule, and replacing many Anglo-saxon traditions with Norse and French ones. It seems likely to me at least that the Bear Hat is the result of this mixing of cultures, but the message was lost to time, as was the significance of the role of a Berserkr, with modern depictions of them being ruthless, mindless savages rather than the highly respected members of society they likely were in their time.

The bearskin was an honour bestowed upon the British Grenadiers after the defeat of the French Grenadiers who wore them in Waterloo and authorised by Queen Victoria to her elite Regiment of Footguards in the Household Division.
The honour is only given to those who have the duty to guard the sovereign and crown.

The reason they wear the Bearskin is because it’s a trophy of war, the bearskins were originally stolen from the Grenadiers of the French Imperial Guard at the battle of Waterloo in 1815, the Coldstream guards (one of the five regiments of foot guards) wear a red plume because they originally dipped them into the blood of the french. And the rifle is NEVER loaded, it’s a drill rifle, not a general purpose rifle.

I served a few days with their special ops and to this day they were bigger than life Former Sgt USMC 1982. “We had to save you yanks in Korea “. I’ll never forget that history lesson.

What are their hours and days. Is it a 40 hour week? Is it shift work, 4 or 5 hours then a 4 or 5 hour break then back at it? Do they trade night, afternoon and day shift every couple weeks? That's what I want to know.

You would be on duty twenty-four hours per day, just like any other branch of the armed services. You will also undergo an extremely high level of initial training. Military training will encompass all forms of weaponry and exercises which will continue throughout your career. You will serve in a fighting capacity when and where called upon to do so. Do not be under the illusion that Guards are simply "pretty soldiers, they're most certainly not. Should wish to be a part of an elite professional fighting machine and consider yourself capable of being such a higher form of man, you have my utmost respect.

I pointed out that this ""Chocolate Box Soldier" was an NCO wearing both Afghan and Iraq service medals. She was even more impressed.

They wear the bearskin caps is because of the british victory against the french old guard( one of the most feared veteran troops during the napoleonic wars) during the battle of waterloo.

Another reason for the tall Bear-Skin hats is that in the 18th and 19th century, when they were grenadiers, the act of hurling a grenade would have knocked the standard Cocked Hat off. 👍🏻
