Greetings My Queen. It's a big area, superstar. But it was so lovely to bring back this research from 1969 (!!!) and walk it around to understand leadership today. It was great research to do :). Tough to deliver in the hotel room - but a blast to research and write!!! Biggest hug to you txxx

I took to Goodreads (as I'll be purchasing from somewhere) - there is a book called 'The Paula Principle'... I do not recall the author, but it highlights how it is for females (edit - as in, those highly capable females are.not.being recognised for their worth).

A little time ago I quipped "Equality is reached through incompetence. And it is surprising how much money one can make out of it." Now I asked my brother, a very successful manager, if he knew the Peter Principle and of course he did. It is well known among economists. Here we are. What is, so to say, the basis of an economists business, handling incompetence without being called out for it, and the stakeholders involved, is turned into a paralysing fungus of academic life.

Is there perhaps some connection with the Dunning-Kruger effect? Are these people aware exactly how incompetent they are or do they think they are fully qualified because they have the position they do? I suppose the hidden google scholar profiles would imply the former. (Also the bit about vice chancellors who focus on style over substance hit so hard since at my uni we seem to have a new huge building every year but less and less permanent staff to work in them.)

I looked this up and Wikipedia states that there's an opera called The Incompetence Opera that was performed at an Ig Nobel Prize ceremony as "a musical encounter with the Peter principle and the Dunning–Kruger Effect". So, this connection has been identified. But Dunning -Kruger came 30 years after The Peter Principle.

Tara, I enjoyed this presentation immensely. I listened to it twice because the topic is so interesting to me. I first read The Peter Principle in high school. I had a brilliant Political Science teacher who applied it to the American political system. Yes, he was brilliant! I never forgot The Peter Principle. In fact, for many years, I worried about my own incompetence and wondered if my real problem was my ineptitude, which would not be mentioned if it served other agendas. Eventually, I decided that a commitment to lifelong learning was the antidote for the individual. I like your fresh application to higher ed. The next question for me is this: how can I bring change? Do I need to work outside the higher ed establishment? Or can micro-changes within it be effective in transforming a bad situation and rescuing the learners?

Hi Cassandra - I think an awareness of the PP is important. The consciousness of it enables us to think about promotion and professional development. As you've said - a commitment to lifelong learning is the medication for PP. But I agree - the capacity to make change - to intervene - in this 'leadership' ideology is really challenging. I'm work on the interregnum modelling - with Baudrillard's 'double refusal' - to try to locate pathways and trajectories. I may fail - but there are some positive strategies to consider... Thank you for being you. txxx
