I've been using blender for over a decade and while I have come up with a multitude of ways to achieve realistic lightning.. not one of them is even half as efficient as this..

Hey, thanks for the tutorial. Here are some questions that I was thinking about while watching your tutorial:
-Why not create the basic shape for the lightning with some basic verts and edges and use the skin modifier before all the other modifiers ?
-Why use a 3D shape instead of some 2D planes (it would be probably incompatible with my previous question but there are a milion ways to do the same thing in Blender) ?

Adding texture doesn't make lightning move around. I think there's a discrepancy with the displacement map. Have any of these modifiers undergone changes since this was posted a year ago?

Have you ever recorded a video of hand or a persons movement and then used that with the motion tracker to drive a rigged character? Sort of like doing mocap but just by using camera footage? I saw it once before done in blender but i cannot reproduce it

Hi Peter. So I’m coming from Houdini and the Applied Houdini courses by Steven Knipping. This is the first quality tutorial I’ve seen for blender. One thing that popped into mind when you asked what we want to see was showing the full pipeline.

For example this lightning shot. I’d like to see the process of tracking. Importing the data to blender. Doing the effect. Outputting the effect. Than comping it. Do you think that’d be possible for you to do?

People usually don't track outside of blender if they're using it. They/we just do it inside Blender with the tracking tools. And the same goes for the compositing altho there is usually where people make the switch to other software

I also recommend using ae2blend. Its a 10 euro addon that brings your after effects 3d track to blender. Works perfectly. And for 10 euros you have unlimited downloads, definitely worth it.

EDIT: Also , what kind of "touch ups" were done in AE?

EDIT #2: I am struggling immensely with how you manage to export the bolt with it's glowing emission using Eevee. Looking into both it and Cycles, I can't find a straightforward method to do this, yet you've been able to export it into after effects somehow. My method was a PNG sequence, but doing it while having a transparent background takes away the emission / bloom.

Awesome tutorial for doing lightning, very creative for getting a more natural look to the arcs. My only question is why you didn't parent the point lights to the verts of the lightning tendrils? Seeing the point lights slowly move about while the verts of the tendrils twitch about kills it for me. Is it perhaps an issue of the snapping to the table/floor surfaces? Irregardless, great tutorial, I'll definitely be looking into this closer ;)

Great video, clear and simple. You could parent light sourses to lightning points instead of empties (for people reading this: select light source, shift+select lightning, tab to edit mode, select 1 or 3 vertices to parent light to, ctrl+p -> make vertex parent). It would make lights more chaotic.
