Hook was a co-founder of Joy Division along with Bernard Sumner in 1976. Together, they recruited vocalist Ian Curtis and drummer Stephen Morris to complete the quartet. The band reformed as New Order following Curtis’ suicide in May 1980.
Along the way, Hook has had a number of solo efforts, most notably with bands Revenge (1989-1993) and Monaco (1996-2001).
In May 2007, Peter Hook announced that he and Bernard Sumner were no longer working together, which at that point seemed to spell the end for New Order. The remaining trio of Sumner, Morris and Cunningham continued as Bad Lieutenant and Hook continued to work with his new band project, Freebass. This band released It's a Beautiful Life in September 2010 and promptly split.
Since 2007, Hook has kept himself busy with his new band The Light and has toured around the world, playing Joy Division's first album Unknown Pleasures live. Subsequent tours featured other Joy Division and New Order albums. The current line-up is Peter Hook, Jack Bates, Paul Kehoe, David Potts and Martin Rebelski. Peter Hook and Light released a string of live albums featuring Joy Division and New Order material.

Peter Hook and The Light Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Feel it closing in,
The fear of whom I call,
Every time I call
I feel it closing in,
I feel it closing in,
Day in, day out,
Day in, day out...
I feel it closing in,
As patterns seem to form.
I feel it cold and warm.
The shadows start to fall.
I feel it closing in,
I feel it closing in,
Day in, day out,
Day in, day out...
I'd have the world around,
To see just whatever happens,
Stood by the door alone,
And then it's fade away,
I see you fade away.
Don't ever fade away.
I need you here today.
Don't ever fade away.
Don't ever fade away...
In Peter Hook and The Light's song "Digital," the lyrics convey a sense of fear, anxiety, and foreboding as the singer feels his surroundings closing in on him. The repetition of the line "I feel it closing in" emphasizes the singer's feeling of being trapped, unable to escape the fear and uncertainty that plagues him. He also expresses the fear of calling someone, who he may rely on or need, but is unsure if they will answer or help him.
As the song progresses, there are hints of a pattern forming that leaves the singer feeling both cold and warm. This could refer to the way life seems to repeat itself, where events seem predictable and rehearsed. The shadows mentioned in the lyrics could also be interpreted as a metaphor for the dark side of life, that is always lurking in the periphery or shadowy aspects of one's own mind.
The final lines of the song express a plea to those who matter to the singer not to fade away, and he ends with a desperate desire for someone to be with him during his struggles. Ultimately, "Digital" is a song that speaks to the universal experience of struggling with fear and uncertainty in life, and the need we all have for love and support from those close to us.
