I've Never Been In Love Before
Peter Littman Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I’ve never been in love before
Now all at once it’s you
It’s you forever more

I’ve never been in love before
I thought my heart was safe
I thought I knew the score
But this is wine
It’s all too strange and strong
I’m full of foolish song
And out my song must pour

So please forgive this helpless haze I’m in
I’ve really never been
In love before

But this is wine
It’s all too strange and strong
I’m full of foolish song
And out my song must pour

So please forgive this helpless haze I’m in

I’ve really never been
In love before

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Peter Littman's song "I've Never Been In Love Before" express the bewilderment and vulnerability that can come with falling in love for the first time. The singer admits that he thought he had his heart under control, but then he meets someone who changes everything. The feeling is compared to wine, suggesting both its heady, intoxicating qualities and the fact that it is a relatively new experience for the singer. He admits that he feels foolish and uncertain, but at the same time, there is a sense of compulsion to express these feelings, to let his "song" pour out. The repeated plea for forgiveness from the object of his affection suggests a hesitancy to be vulnerable and a recognition that this person has the power to hurt him.

The song's repetition of the opening line, "I've never been in love before" emphasizes the novelty and intensity of the experience. The use of metaphors like wine and song suggest that falling in love is something that can be both exhilarating and overwhelming. At the same time, there is a vulnerability and uncertainty that is inherent in this new experience. The repetition of the chorus at the end of the song also suggests that the singer is still grappling with these feelings and perhaps still unsure of how to navigate this new terrain of love.

cool

I wouldn't like this even a little without the singing . But the song improves without vocals .
Baker did admirable music on trumpet . If he lived, a vocal duet with Benson surely would smash the charts .
