Steele's bass voice sets much of the mood for Type O Negative's brooding melodies. Before joining Type O Negative, Steele played for heavy metal group Fallout, and the thrash metal band Carnivore.
Steele is almost as famous for his build as he is for his music. He stands approximately 6'6" tall, and leaves it to no one's imagination that he works out quite strenuously. He was often called Lurch by friends, as he also had an exceptionally deep voice (this would explain the severe tuning down apparent in many Type O Negative songs).
In 1995, Steele posed nude for Playgirl magazine.
Steele was known equally well for both his humour and serious depression. In the Type O Negative home video, "After Dark", he lets viewers in on the fact that he takes Prozac for his condition. The songs "Unsuccessfully Coping with the Natural Beauty of Infidelity" and "Xero Tolerance" were both written about a girlfriend he loved very deeply who had cheated on him. According to the bands website biography, Steele attempted suicide because of the incident, though it is not known how.
There were unconfirmed rumours of Steele's death after his band's website posted an image of a tombstone bearing Steele's name and the dates 1962-2005. According to an article dated May 14th, 2005, Steele is not dead. The article, at blabbermouth.net, states that the gag is related to the release of the band's next album, their first for SPV Records. The website discontinued the tombstone picture in October 2005.
In May 2006, professional poker player Phil Hellmuth announced that he would appear on an upcoming season of VH1's The Surreal Life, alongside Steele, Playboy Playmate Tina Jordan, and professional wrestler "Macho Man" Randy Savage.
Go To Sleep
Peter Steele Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
was never really good enough
the dreams we had
have never really come
we've walked together
we've talked apart
close your eyes,
and go to sleep
and go to sleep
I tried to tell you
but it's only talk
I've waited and waited
now I'm the only one
we're still together
but we're lonelier
close your eyes,
rest your head,
and go to sleep
and go to sleep
You don't remember the the
things that you won't
you won't let people
inside your soul
but I know, what I love you for
The prode of teardrops
too emotional
kinder people
with a tougher love
we've run togther
now we've reached the start
close your eyes,
rest your head,
and go to sleep
and go to sleep
In Peter Steele's "Go to Sleep" song, the singer is revealing his or her desire to leave the life he or she has been living behind. The life he or she is leaving has been insufficient in comparison to the dreams he or she and the companion have shared. While the singer and the companion have been walking together, their conversations have been diverging in separate directions. The singer tells the companion to rest his or her head, close his or her eyes, and go to sleep. In this context, it can be interpreted figuratively, meaning the singer is urging the companion to stop worrying and to let his or her troubles fade away.
The singer also attempts to reveal his or her true emotions to the companion but finds that words can only go so far. The singer has waited for the companion time and time again but is now the only one in their relationship. While they are still together, they both feel lonely. The singer acknowledges that the companion is guarded and does not let anyone inside their soul. However, the singer knows what he or she loves the companion for.
In conclusion, "Go to Sleep" is a heartfelt plea to the companion to let go of all their concerns and embrace a kinder version of themselves. It is an invitation to leave behind the life that is no longer serving them and to move on to a better place.
