The Lighthouse
Peter and the Wolf Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The lyrics of Peter and the Wolf's "The Lighthouse" talk about the chaos, confusion, and destruction that the singer has witnessed. The first stanza talks about the collapse of the singer's house, and in response, the singer follows the swans like they follow their dreams. The second stanza talks about the singer's sense of being indebted for living in a borrowed house and committing a borrowed crime. The singer seeks help, and in doing so, sees the spike of the railings from the 28/3rd floor. The lyrics then say, "Build your castle, stop collecting stones, and the river bed shall not be your home." The advice suggests the singer to start building a home and stop being idle as it will prevent the singer from ending up on the streets or even worse, in the river.
The chorus of the song represents a plea to seek the lighthouse, which may be a metaphor for a beacon of hope and guidance, away from the destruction and chaos around. It suggests that education and knowledge are the ladder to move upwards from the situations of desperation. The verse that follows the chorus talks about the explosions that surround the singer and others. The lyrics emphasize that there are two choices for the characters: either to give in and greet the danger or to retaliate against them. Finally, the same chant "Build your castle, stop throwing stones. Cause those firebirds are coming down on our homes," is repeated, intending to make the singer strive for better by being diligent and focused.

The day everything we had built fell apart
I went down stream.

I followed the swans
I chased my dreams

In need of help I came to your door.
I needed someone to help me and I came to you

I was in a dangerous situation with no way out
The 28/3rd floor.
I was high up and in a precarious position
Singing
Expressing myself audibly
"Build your castle, stop collecting stones
Invest in your own future rather than picking up distractions
And the river bed shall not be your home"
Taking action now will save you from future consequences
To the lighthouse my friend!
The lighthouse is a metaphor for safety and guidance
I bless your words and education
I appreciate your wisdom and advice
To the lighthouse my friend.
I need you to guide me out of danger
Just go! just go!

To the lighthouse my friend.
I am relying on you for help
I am sorry that you came to find
I regret that things have gotten this bad
"Great great minds against themselves conspire'
People can often be their own worst enemies
Now the bombs drop around our feet,
Things have escalated and danger is imminent
Do we throw them back
Do we respond with violence?
Or bow and greet them.
Do we accept our fate and surrender?
Everyone now, is so terrified
Fear is pervasive
Of the glowing dark
The light is fading
And those orange skies.
The world is changing and nothing will be the same
"Build your castle, stop throwing stones
Violence will only bring about more destruction
Cause those fire birds are coming down on our homes"
The consequences of our actions will eventually catch up to us
To the lighthouse my friends
We need to come together for protection and guidance
It cannot even be a question
There is no other option
We must go, we must go
We need to act now in order to survive
