Lost in Space
Peter von Poehl Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
twirl and twist
and cocoon.
Motionless
in comfy clothes
we dreamed;
we'd fly away, passing every continent
as we pleased.
Unfolded slowly,
stretched out out limbs
to the maximum of faith.
Spin and spin,
twirl and twist
and cocoon.
Motionless
in comfy clothes
we dreamed;
punched the cash machine,
hang the expenses,
dame fortune was watching
waving casually to the crowd.
We sent out sparks
to the world,
like secret agents of love,
millions of tiny splints
lost in space.
The lyrics of Peter von Poehl’s “Lost in Space” create a whimsical and dreamy soundscape, where the singer describes being motionless yet in constant motion, “spin and spin, twirl and twist and cocoon”. The lyrics depict two people lost in their own imaginations, dreaming away, browsing in “oceanic sentiments”. They express a desire for exploration, “we’d fly away, passing every continent as we pleased” yet their bodies remain motionless in their cozy clothes. It’s as though they envision their lives as a journey, a continuous motion through various experiences and places, yet they never actually leave the comfort of their own space.
The second half of the song takes a more concrete turn, expressing the need to extract oneself from the dream world and deal with the financial realities of life. “Punched the cash machine, hang the expenses” expresses a reluctance to deal with the realities of the material world, yet “dame fortune was watching waving casually to the crowd” reminds us that money always plays a factor in our lives, whether we like it or not. However, in the final lines “we sent out sparks to the world, like secret agents of love, millions of tiny splints lost in space” the song returns to the dreamy, otherworldly feeling. The idea of sending out sparks and tiny splints lost in space represents the idea that although we may feel insignificant in the grand scheme of things, we are still part of something greater, sending out small ripples of love and energy that have the potential to make a bigger impact than we realize.
