One of my favorite shows is The Jeffersons which started out as a spin-off of all in the family TV show. If you remember George and Louise Jefferson they were basically two blue collar people who owned a dry cleaning store on the All in the family.

Later is George became more successful he opened up a string of dry cleaners and they become upper middle class
Now think about this Louise married George when he was building. Louise wasn't looking for a man that had to have so much money she married a man that would be a good husband and give her a good family which he did.

Sadly the modern woman would never consider a situation like this or if they do it's when they're older in their mid-40s when they have very little if any options or bargaining power. This is the dilemma for most modern black women who for the most part look down with disdain on men regardless of what that man is achieved.

What these women want now is a high earning man to take care of their lifestyle which is ironic because with that basically means is despite how much money a woman makes she still wants a man to make more which means she still wants the man to take care of them but she doesn't want to follow any instruction. What a lot of women don't realize is that the majority of successful men work hard and get ahead in life in order to provide for their families.
If there's no prospect of having a wife and kids, most men will choose to live minimalist lifestyles.

My husband & I met freshman year of college 12 years ago and got married a year after college. We now have a home, two kids, and although we are still grinding it has been the most fulfilling aspect of my life watching my husband & our kids grow up. We are literally growing up together. It’s sooooo rewarding is what people don’t realize & I just finished law school so it was easier for me to have kids with a husband financially & otherwise & we are middle class now but was dead broke then.

I understand exactly what JP is saying. I was all career even when I got married at 27yo. By 29yo I had my masters degree and starting a family was on the brain. We ended up having to do fertility treatments, and we had our twin boys by the time I was 32yo. I’m 43yo now. It’s been an exhausting decade I’ve had, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world. My career stalled, somewhat, during those years but I feel it has been worth it. I have 7yrs left of juggling raising our boys and keeping my career afloat. Then I’ll have many years in my 50s and beyond to be super-focused on my own career and personal goals again. While I’m proud of my career and what I have accomplished, memories with family have been the most fulfilling experiences of my adult life.

Being 38 years old (39 in January), I'm noticing that my classmates who are female, single, and childless are going on girl trips and posting pictures on Facebook and Instagram portraying their lifestyle. However, as I'm reading the book The Shrouded Lighthouse, I can see and/or sense the sorrow that they try to hide. When you have to go overboard to prove that you're happy, then chances are you're not. I'm not saying you can't have a vacation or have a good time, but I can remember taking one or two of them to lunch years ago (about 10 give or take) and saying to me I'm focused on my career. Years later, how has the career fulfill your need for companionship

But it’s winter, there is a pandemic, I am at home raising a little child, I can’t travel even if I wanted to, cannot go anywhere without a mask and gallon of sanitizer - so you have no idea how grateful I am for social media so I can watch other people do the things I can’t do at the moment. It doesn’t mean that I’m unhappy - it’s a good substitute for the real thing until life goes back to normal. And even then I’ll still keep watching other people, it’s human nature.

I believe everyone is different.I am one of those single Millinieals at 30 and I've never had a desire to marry or have children until I got 30. I wasn't suppressing it I just didn't desire it. I have actually seen the opposite of this. Alot of my friends who got married young and have children are either divorced and have told me several times I'm"lucky" to not have children and be single. If an individual grew up in a house hold where they saw financial problems, money most likely will be their focus for most of their life. Also it’s very hard develop trusting in others for example a man if you didn’t see individuals around you being able to trust and rely on others. You will most likely have an individualistic mindset and chasing the bag 💰 mind set. The therapy that’s needed to help people get better is stigmatized and the time it takes to also work on yourself many can’t bother.

I believe you can have it all, but not at once. Have kids in wedlock while you are young enough to keep up with them. Don't have more than you can afford should something happen to your husband. When they are older, work if you want. Explore and travel with your spouse if health allows.

I’ve been a soldier and served in multiplayer theatres of war, across the world, I’ve set up my own company since and do well for my self, but none of those things are as fulfilling, rewarding or as difficult as being a parent.

This is common sense to me. If you want kids and a family, you need to find a partner early as a woman. If you don't want kids, you have a bit more flexibility with age, but a smaller dating pool as most family oriented men want kids.

Although the biological clock is more punishing on a woman, I think men experience a similar switch in priorities by their late 20s. Once my frontal lobe caught up in my mid 20s I changed from career driven, selfish “bachelor” to wanting to find a long term partner that I could call my best friend. I just think for men we have a bit more time, so 30 doesn’t flip the same switch in our heads as it does for women.

You either think different or you should consciously make yourself to start thinking differently, about the relationship, the job, school, you as a person in general. Man, I really agree with Jordan Peterson, I am 21 and worked really hard these past 4 years to get myself out of poverty, and I made it. I love my job but don't feel as fulfilled by just working anymore. I want to have kids and get married if I can find someone, so many people are giving amazing guys no chance because of their jobs- give me the plumber or the roofer! lol

This is good that you say that because your still looking for a man that’s not afraid to put in work aka work hard when need be. On top of that is learning a trade. Some men even end up hustling on the side even if they don’t have a trade. They might have a growth mentality maybe even open up their own business... some of us want to be able to provide for a family and still have goals we want to reach.

Echoing a few comments below and agree with JP to a certain degree (in general the basic flaw to most of his arguments)! We somehow as philosophers, observers, and/or academics want to examine the issue today, suggest some solutions, but do not want to observe the relativity of things and situations. A person with trauma at a young age will have a tougher time to adjust and achieve a certain balance! Trauma for most kids comes from a dysfunctional family circle: poverty, abuse, and/or oppression! We need to stop telling ppl get over it, your past doesn’t make who you are (damn lie). Most women go for career because financially stable households is not what they grew up seeing! Others have gone with the family option and now don’t have anything because their divorced husband was the bread winner.

This is such a varied conversation, in the black community, mass incarceration is another reason for a shortage of men. Most families can’t live off of one income. Some watched fathers growing up not involved or making family priority. Also both sexes as a whole are deciding to have kids older. JP
was speaking of successful white women that make a shift and have male counterparts to marry that are able to financially take care of the family on one income.

The reality is, we are facing capitalism on steroids. Some people are working and still unable to eat. I worked on my career throughout my 20s and, had my babies in my 30s. Thanks to my career I can work part time and flexibly around my kids. Kids don't stay kids forever, I also need to be ok when my kids are living their best lives. In this day and age, girls shouldn't be deterred from educating themselves..Too many women are stuck in horrible marriages that they cannot afford to leave. Personally, I love being a mum and glad I had them later. But, some women genuinely don't want kids and that's ok. It's a lifetime commitment and a lot of work! Not all men and women need to be parents.

The middle classes here where I am are definitely being screwed over here with taxes but being poor here is on a level I've never seen before and that scares me. When I was growing up, food banks didn't exist, now they are everywhere and poor people are literally starving despite receiving government handouts. Maybe it's different over there.
But, either way, do you think women not working will lead to you being taxed less? I don't understand the correlation between feminism and your impending socialist system?

But when young women in their 20s are told that one day when they are in their 30s they will most likely want a family, husband, kids, etc. they disagree. Of course they will change in a span of 10-15 years. They change what they think and what they want 5 times a day even. It's the same thing with honesty. When they are told honesty, they can't accept it, refuse and argue. Ironically women lie to each other the most.

Nothing has changed for men. The concept is the same as it have been even 100 years ago. Men have to find work to take care of their children. When things go great with the children it's the doing of the mother, when things don't turn out as planned, it's due to what the father did not do. Once the fathers dies the children and wives/baby mama says their farewells, then realize just how much of a void was created after his departure.

Never encouraged to have a family? It's possible, but I have my doubts. I've seen all the threads where women of all kinds get annoyed by relatives asking about when are they are going to have children. It's a giant pet-peeve for women today, so it isn't quite fair to say they haven't been warned.

Now it may not go into the specific details about geriatric pregnancy. That needs to be taught probably in high school, if people really have their best interest in mind.

I lived in a small town it was common to be married at your 18-20s. Now is more focused in career and independence. Some of my classmates married and are happy, some aren’t. I think the mistake is we focus in an objective too much. When is many things that developed a fulfilling life. It’s all up to the individual’s desires, needs. I've been friends with several women long enough to see this play out. They were upset with me 10 to 15 years ago when I brought up the subject of family and kids. It was unthinkable to them.

Now they are upset and lonely. Literally hunting men down to start families. Some are on antidepressants. I didnt attack them with the subject I remember being on lunch breaks and bringing the subject up neutrally and in an open manner as I wasn't sure I wanted anything at the time either. But I always kept an open mind to it. I didn't spit on the idea as if it was beneath me or an "outdated concept". Which a lot of them viewed it as. NOW....they've had a serious change of mind on the matter.

A lot of older men DO feel that way. My own father included. He was never around always working. It was a running joke that I didn’t have a dad (with friends) because he was gone before we got up and came home after went to bed. He’s retired now and anytime he wants to spend time with me… it’s working on my fixer upper. He literally has no idea how to just hang out and bond unless it’s doing work. There are weekends that I don’t want to do anything but sit on my ass and he’s knocking on the door with work. It was damn annoying until I realized that this is how he shows affection because he has no idea how to do it otherwise.

this topic is very broad and can be seen from different perspectives. but in my humble opinion, as someone who actually comes from a patriarchal country these problems came as a result of the way women were treated before. And i am talking about the time were most women were stay at home wives or mothers. I see this in my country as well now, that is way i have this opinion. Women were oppressed because their role as homemakers wasnt respected or seen as anything of value. because they didnt work and earned money they were dependent on their husbands. This gave their husbands power over them and we have seen how most people act when they have power over others, they take advantages of their power. Women had to work to gain freedom from their partners. this came with a price. but also when women stayed at home there was a price to pay.
I firmly believe that things might be different if men were appreciative of womens role as homemakers and mothers. not just with words but with actions as well. because i am one of those women who works because i want to be financially independent from others. but i would love that when i have children to stay at home until they enter kindergarten. that would mean i would have to depend on a man and if i see that my partner is not respecting me or treating me fairly that i would have to start working earlier than my plan.i know so many women who had to do this, because their partner wouldnt respect them enough and considered her contribution to the family as nothing of value.
in this case i believe that men hold a great power to make a positive change so that more women who want to stay home to raise children, actually stay home.

Men often go through the same change about careers as women. I have so many male friends who were very ambitious in their 20s and early 30s. Most of that goes away and they are now more inclined to spend free time pursuing family and hobbies then they are chasing the next promotion or raise. I am 44 and went through it about 8 years ago, I work because I have to not because I want to, and I enjoy my job and it pays very very well.

I think it’s important to look at the psychology of why some successful women struggle when it comes to relationships. Sometimes our past wounds can prevent us from experiencing healthy connections, or maybe we don’t know what healthy connections look like. The success a woman is able to achieve in her career might come from a need to not be at anyones’ mercy. Maybe she feels safer knowing she can rely on herself to be good. Maybe she has trouble being vulnerable, even with herself. There can be a lack of self awareness. Etc. Becoming a wife and mother when you have not yet begun your healing journey is worse than being a single career woman. Imagine what type of partner an unhealed person attracts. Think about how many unhappy unions there are just because people were too scared to be alone. Healthy relationships require vulnerability. Vulnerability requires honesty and intimacy. Intimacy requires trust. All of these elements have to start with self, the individual. Being a single career woman, you can control your environment and every aspect of your life. Being in a relationship requires collaboration, meaning you have to respect the other person’s experience; you can’t control them. But how can you understand that when you have yet to even understand yourself? Just some food for thought.

@M.A.P. Investments Research I'm definitely not saying women shouldn't be a Boss Bae. I'm just pointing out that women have a hard choice because it's all but impossible to have it all. They can't be both Boss Baes and super involved, attentive mothers and still keep their sanity. I don't envy women that choice at all, but it really is a choice which is what I think Peterson is trying to get across. If a woman stays home, that family won't need day care, and that $60K, in a lot of the country, is pretty okay. If she is a Boss Bae and is the bread winner, then she should go back to work and Average Andy can stay home with the child to avoid those daycare costs. That's something that has to be worked out. But also realize that a Boss Bae, because she doesn't want that average guy, she wants a guy who makes "at least what she does" in most cases, has now cut out an enormous percentage of guys from the dating pool. Many then tend to look around and wonder where all the good men are at while not realizing they're cutting out a large chunk of the men because of this arbitrary financial requirement.
I will say too...and please be honest about considering this point...note how you said Average Andy is a medical bill away from being broke, as if he's broke on his own, and that him getting injured or sick wouldn't simply be an affect that the entire family has to deal with. Isn't an average woman, realizing that most all of us are right around average by definition, also a medical bill away from being broke. It doesn't feel that way when she has a husband though, right? If she has a medical bill, the family makes less money, but we probably wouldn't say that she, herself, is now broke. BTW, it's really interesting to have a good, spirited conversation with someone like this without it devolving into the usual internet terribleness. Thanks.

@M.A.P. Investments Research I'm with you on much of that. Not all trade jobs will hold, but many will. But at least today, a trade job is a reasonable income with a low(ish) amount of debt. Contrast that to some sort of liberal arts/social science degree that will get you less income than the trade but comes along with an enormous amount of debt. Men see that, do the logical comparison, and pick the former.
You said, "of course women don't want that" when speaking about financially average men. Why not? Most women are also near to being financially average themselves. That's what average means. Why is it up to the man to be more than financially average if the woman is a "boss bae". A financially average man should be fine, right?

Meh. Most men I know (and even myself from time to time) would like to have more choices than we do. It's not just a woman-thing.

Life is like a funnel. As you make choices and decisions, you close off certain options and opportunities in the pursuit of what is most important to you at the time. As you move through life, the funnel gets narrower and narrower, until you find yourself on a specific path that is very hard to move away from. It's just the nature of things.

Nobody knows You more than you do. It pays to work out for yourself what you want in life - and what sort of life you want. To do that, you need to understand your values as well as your needs. If you don't know where you're going, how do you expect to get there? Once you have worked out what sort of life you want (for yourself) set short, medium and long-term goals to help you achieve it. Life is simpler that way. Every choice you are subsequently confronted with is easier if you are operating within the framework of "Does this decision take me closer to my goals, or further away from it?"

If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.

Yeah I know exactly what he is talking about. I am a women and I did 20 years in the military. But I chose to have 5 children. That choice made it almost impossible for me to do the extra things needed to get promoted. I saw a lot of women who promoted fast but they were also single with no children and they were pretty miserable.

It two sides to the coin! As a guy myself & single, I get lonely at times & sorrowful & all the "what if's" or coulda shoulda woulda's. But here's what certain! I'm not being nagged by shit tests & unnecessary drama because she dreamed I was cheating. I won't be on some murder show because my girl/wife wanted insurance money then run off with her lover.

So likewise with these women with all this regret about not being a mom/wife. Don't let ppl (men in particular) make you feel down about being alone, being childless, or never married. Because you coulda been all that, but also been beat on/cheated on, fell subject to some damn tyrant, and then trapped financially, physically, mentally, & emotionally. Then you'd still be thinking, ohh what if this/that. Feelings come & go, so accept YOUR decision & learn to make the best of it, because it could always be worse.

All these bitter men telling women to go buy cat food & that they (women) are gonna die ... alone. Well so are men bruh! Men lead in suicide by a ridiculous amount, so men die alone too. So if you're alone now & childless & 35 or greater, male or female, make the best of what you do have. Be alive, find something to do, try different things. Well speaking for my own experiences. I will wait. I'm not fully the woman I am to be prepared to manage a marriage life let alone take care of another person if I can't take care of myself. Everyone shouls have the choice of when they feel they should get married and at times its normally when you aren't ready or are. Its an individual choice and we shouldn't generally judge who got married young and who didn't. Not everyone's life story suits a particular scenario. I was taught from a young age, school, education, job then if God willing marriage and a family. Like everyone's scenarios suppose to follow that, but that is what society wanted us to believe. Then life hits you and you question everything about life. So, my conclusion is, do what makes you happy, no matter how long it takes.

Success is more tangible to lady bosses. Love is definitely fleeting but we girls know the importance of family and freedom is equally important. If love comes then it comes, we will accept however if not there is no need to push it. One thing i can never let go is not having children. So i might end up planning to get preggy with some guy and run away. Lol. Usually its the irresponsible dude who will hit you and run but this time i might as well do that. 😂No kidding im actually considering it. My wife and i chose to not have kids and it was the best thing we ever did. Yes your job can suck, but having a kid doens't make a job better. Career should NEVER be the source of fulfillment, neither shold family. Find it within yourself.

That's how my girlfriend was super smart gifted even. Her dad wanted her to go be whatever but rich. Her mother on the other hand wanted her to be married with a few kids be a house wife. But she couldn't say it because of respect for her husband. So when we met she was hell bent on becoming whatever. I mean her drive was amazing but without even knowing any of this I could sense she wanted to be a house wife. She would come over cook clean and just act as a wife. Long story short she had a break through and now that's where we're headed her being a house wife well my house wife. And she is too happy and very excited.

He has done everything to win my trust and I was being so toxic with him
But I realized that is me who has to change and trust him
He has done everything for me to help me for the last 2 years
Us woman are also getting over things man do

@ABC Its only beneficial for a woman to marry if a man is a provider and financially desirable. According to studies, most men are not and the ones that are, are usually taken. So it isnt looking good for the average woman anyway but women can look at other options such as sperm banks, egg freezing etc. If they REALLY want a child In order to not give men that wont marry the benefit of carrying on his legacy. As for single women, they can get everything that a marriage provides without actually having to be in one. After all, companionship and intimacy comes is free on the market for many, just like having babies is. We are blessed with that and decide who procreates. Women just need to raise their standards (its slowly happening with decline in birth rates) but honestly, women need to only pair up with financially desirable men that are providers. The single women need to say 'no ring, no womb' and let the losers die out like the old days. That's the only way we will know who the best men are. Now, which side of the coin will you fall in if this was to happen? Will you get a woman to carry on your name/ legacy or will you die out? Because it's going to happen soon.

He's completely wrong in suggesting that only women with 'psychological problems' value their career more than having children by the age of 30. Some women just really enjoy their jobs, so much so that they're willing to not have children so they can do what they love. And for some, that's actually the most rational choice to make - kids are very demanding (especially for mothers who birth them) and nowadays, having kids is no guarantee that you'll be looked after in old age. People spend most of their adult life working, so if you love what you do for a living, you'll spend most of your time doing something you love. It would probably be a sign of psychological problems if a person in that position DIDN'T prioritise their career. And prioritising children over paid income puts women in a much more financially vulnerable position than if they worked and didn't have kids.

This same exact thing can apply to men and their youth. We love to steer young men off course so badly when they're a kid they don't even envision traditional masculine roles.

"Advertisements"? We're not "told" anything. We simply choose what to hear. I'm 67, never wanted kids, never wanted to get sucked into a marriage, mortgage, etc. I agree with Peterson on some things. But, he's a family man and thinks anyone who doesn't follow that route will be unfulfilled.
I had 2 careers. I was a journalist, then a carpenter. I had my own business, started 2 conservation organizations, became a professional level wildlife photographer, was a bike racer for 5 years, ran marathons, was a mountain climber and guide, I was a national park tour guide, taught photography workshops, traveled...I'll stop there. If I had a family I never could have done many of those things, and I wouldn't have been happy. So, Peterson is wrong, even if he haas letters indicating his expertise in his name.
