1) Petra is a Christian Rock band formed in 1972 by Bob Hartman, Bill Glover, John DeGroff, and Greg Hough. "Petra" means "rock" in NT Greek, making the band name a triple pun. Rising from the Jesus music movement, and initially signed to [recordlabel]Myrrh Records[/recordlabel], they fought to gain acceptance and recognition in a church culture that at the time believed rock music to be off-limits. Over time they eventually won over most of their critics, thanks to a steady approach and some solid adult contemporary airplay hits like "The Coloring Song," outside of their usual rock fare. By the mid-80's, when lead singer Greg X. Volz left the band and was replaced by John Schlitt, Petra had solidified their place as the foremost Christian rock band in the industry with a string of hit albums and singles and strong touring. The release of Petra Praise: The Rock Cries Out marked a turn towards modern-sounding worship music that would soon explode into the modern worship movement.
Petra was nominated for and won numerous Grammy and Dove Awards. In 1991, after the release of their acclaimed Beyond Belief record, Petra became the first rock band ever to win for Group of the Year at the Dove Awards. They were also the first Christian rock band to be inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame.
For three decades Petra continued to produce albums despite changes in their line-up as well as the genre and market. On May 24th, 2005 Petra announced their retirement after 33 years of ministry. They recorded one of their final performances in Franklin, Tennessee to release it as their last album, Farewell. Their last performance finished in the early hours of January 1, 2006 in Murphy, North Carolina. Bob Hartman and John Schlitt continue to tour under the moniker II Guys From Petra.

Petra Lyrics

A new found peace inside
I've made a decision
And now I'm satisfied
Jesus told me to follow
And to count the cost I'm willing to pay
I know I'm not worthy
[Chorus]
I just want to be
I just want to be
I just want to be His disciple
I lived a delusion
With no one else to blame
I found a solution
When I called on His name
I may not have money or riches
But I found something better to be
To be a servant of Jesus
He means more than the world to me
The fields are ready for harvest
But the laborers are few
I just want to be where the Lord can use me
And work until the day is through
All of my life I've been searching
For the person who hides in me
I finally found someone
Who could make me who I want to be
I can't wait to see Him
Just want to hear Him say
"Well done faithful servant
Enter into joy today"
The song "Disciple" by Petra is about a person who has found a new sense of love and peace through their decision to follow Jesus. They understand that it won't be an easy journey, but they are willing to pay the cost of being a disciple. Even though they realize they are not worthy, they still have a desire to serve Jesus and be his loyal follower. The chorus repeats the desire to be a disciple of Jesus throughout the song.
The second verse reveals that the person had been living a delusional life and found a solution when they turned to Jesus. They now understand that money and riches are not as important as being a faithful servant of Jesus, who means everything to them. The third verse acknowledges that the fields are ready for a harvest but the laborers are few, the singer wants to be where the Lord can use them and work until the day is done. It's a statement of their intentions to be a disciple, to be where Jesus needs them to be and do what he needs them to do.
The fourth verse describes a lifetime of searching for the person who hides inside of them, someone who they can be proud of. This search has finally ended with their decision to become a disciple of Jesus. They just want to hear him say "well done faithful servant, enter into joy today", knowing they have lived a life serving Jesus by their actions, thoughts and beliefs.
Overall, the song is a proclamation of faith, a desire to serve Jesus and a willingness to surrender everything for Him. It encourages listeners to strive to become disciples of Jesus themselves, even if it means making sacrifices and paying a price.

@Destroyer83
When I first listened to this song, I litterally cried, because they are so right... I just want to be His disciple. Everything else is in His hands.
@bojo591
I was spiritually raised by these guys. Man what a ministry. Sidenote: They gave away a working version of the guitar "ship" on the cover. Wonder if it will ever show up on ebay?
@RobertoClausi
I saw a video earlier, Gettingoffofthecouch, a christian church band doing a cover of Disciple song and the guitarist had a guitar ship,
as this album cover. Now that you mention a guitar ship was given away, that must be it. awesome song and awesome ministry.

@Dwight Ropp Mark Kelly sang the lead vocal on this song, duet with Greg Volz.
