He
Petra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Here in my hour of need
I'm lonely
Forsaken again
I'm wounded and left here to bleed
With no solace from a stranger or friend

Who hears my cry to revive and restore
One who has been here before
He's been in my shoes
Been down this road before
He's been tested too
He's been through this door
He feels the pain
And He heals the bruise
He's been in my shoes

He's been in my shoes
The Union of God in a man
Is a mystery
That I can't understand
But now with my suffering known
I'm reminded
That I'm never alone

Who has been tried and been tempted this way?
Jesus who now hears me pray

He's been in my shoes
Been down this road before
He's been tested too
He's been through this door
He feels the pain
And He heals the bruise
He's been in my shoes
He's been in my shoes

He was a man just like me
But He lived His life blamelessly
Now I'm beginning to see
He holds my hand
He understands

He's been in my shoes
Been down this road before
He's been tested too
He's been through this door
He feels the pain
And He heals the bruise
He's been in my shoes

He's been in my shoes
He's been in my shoes

Overall Meaning

Petra's song He is an ode to the comfort and solace provided by Jesus Christ, who has endured human suffering and temptations on Earth. The singer in the song is hurting and feeling alone, with no one to turn to for help. However, they find peace in the knowledge that Jesus understands their pain and has been through similar struggles. The lyrics express gratitude for the connection with Jesus, with the repeated refrain "He's been in my shoes" emphasizing the singer's recognition of the shared experience.

The song explores the concept of the "Union of God in a man", acknowledging the mystery of Jesus as both fully divine and fully human. Despite the singer's inability to fully comprehend this, they find comfort in the idea that Jesus's humanity makes him relatable and able to understand their struggles. The song also alludes to the Christian doctrine of Jesus living a blameless life, contrasting his moral purity with the singer's own failures and shortcomings.

Ultimately, the lyrics to He emphasize the power of empathy and understanding in providing comfort to those experiencing pain and loneliness. The portrayal of Jesus as a relatable and compassionate figure highlights the importance of finding common ground with others and recognizing our shared humanity.

I was born in 93. You would think I'd be too young to have any sort of attachment to music like this, but something about it is just incredible. I might be the only one of my friends who knows what Petra is, but they are seriously missing out!
