1) Petra is a Christian Rock band formed in 1972 by Bob Hartman, Bill Glover, John DeGroff, and Greg Hough. "Petra" means "rock" in NT Greek, making the band name a triple pun. Rising from the Jesus music movement, and initially signed to [recordlabel]Myrrh Records[/recordlabel], they fought to gain acceptance and recognition in a church culture that at the time believed rock music to be off-limits. Over time they eventually won over most of their critics, thanks to a steady approach and some solid adult contemporary airplay hits like "The Coloring Song," outside of their usual rock fare. By the mid-80's, when lead singer Greg X. Volz left the band and was replaced by John Schlitt, Petra had solidified their place as the foremost Christian rock band in the industry with a string of hit albums and singles and strong touring. The release of Petra Praise: The Rock Cries Out marked a turn towards modern-sounding worship music that would soon explode into the modern worship movement.
Petra was nominated for and won numerous Grammy and Dove Awards. In 1991, after the release of their acclaimed Beyond Belief record, Petra became the first rock band ever to win for Group of the Year at the Dove Awards. They were also the first Christian rock band to be inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame.
For three decades Petra continued to produce albums despite changes in their line-up as well as the genre and market. On May 24th, 2005 Petra announced their retirement after 33 years of ministry. They recorded one of their final performances in Franklin, Tennessee to release it as their last album, Farewell. Their last performance finished in the early hours of January 1, 2006 in Murphy, North Carolina. Bob Hartman and John Schlitt continue to tour under the moniker II Guys From Petra.

I Will Seek You
Petra Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Based on Acts 17:27
Living water - I am thirsty and dry
Bread of heaven - only You satisfy
I am waiting for Your comfort and peace
Come and fill me, let this emptiness cease
I will seek You
I will find You
I will follow what I know is true
I will seek You
Like I used to
I will worship You
You are holy, You are a wonder to me
In creation I see Your majesty
(Chorus)
Speak to me and I will listen
(Give me the call and point the way)
Lead me on and I will follow
(Hearing Your Word I will obey)
(Chorus)
The song "I Will Seek You" by Petra is a powerful and uplifting praise song that captures the essence of what it means to seek and follow God. The lyrics are inspired by Acts 17:27, which talks about how we should seek God in our lives, even though He is not far from any of us.
The first verse talks about how we can never be truly satisfied by anything in this world except God. The singer is thirsty and dry, but only the living water of God can quench his thirst. The reference to bread of heaven is a nod to the manna that God provided for the Israelites in the wilderness - another example of how God sustains us and satisfies our needs, even in the most difficult of circumstances.
The chorus emphasizes the singer's desire to seek and worship God, no matter what the cost. He will follow what he knows is true and continue to seek God with all his heart, no matter what challenges he may face along the way.
The second verse acknowledges God's holiness and majesty, which can be seen all around us in the wonders of creation. Finally, the bridge of the song emphasizes the importance of listening to God's voice and obeying His Word, even when it may be difficult or uncomfortable to do so.
Overall, "I Will Seek You" is a beautiful and powerful song that captures the essence of what it means to seek and follow God with all our hearts. It reminds us that no matter what challenges we may face in life, we can always find comfort, peace, and satisfaction in God alone.

This is true rock music. I always missed the "smashing" kind of power of rock in christian music, but this one has it. We can praise God in all music genre, and with full heart and power. God bless Petra and you all!

All praise and worship songs should kick like this.

I was dissapointed with the albums after Wake Up Call so I didn't bother listening to Jekyl and Hyde. I had heard they started doing rock again, but I doubted it would be as good as their 80s stuff, but listening to this, I've been convinced otherwise. This is good stuff. Thanks for posting all the Petra music. BTW, Unknown Petra Fan, you must have a pretty broad taste in music to like all of Petra's stuff through all their changes :)

Well, I never would have listened to Petra were it not for God Fixation and Petra Praise. My taste is for their music is also broad but I believe that as much as they were hard, likable as they were in the early 90's, some of their melodies are now quite dated and won't easily appeal to a new listener. Well I do like those early 90's albums too nonetheless. But J& H is something else- modern but real hard and awesome.

They were right. you can compare them to Queen. Thank You Lord for giving me Christian substitutes for my taste in music.
