1) Petra is a Christian Rock band formed in 1972 by Bob Hartman, Bill Glover, John DeGroff, and Greg Hough. "Petra" means "rock" in NT Greek, making the band name a triple pun. Rising from the Jesus music movement, and initially signed to [recordlabel]Myrrh Records[/recordlabel], they fought to gain acceptance and recognition in a church culture that at the time believed rock music to be off-limits. Over time they eventually won over most of their critics, thanks to a steady approach and some solid adult contemporary airplay hits like "The Coloring Song," outside of their usual rock fare. By the mid-80's, when lead singer Greg X. Volz left the band and was replaced by John Schlitt, Petra had solidified their place as the foremost Christian rock band in the industry with a string of hit albums and singles and strong touring. The release of Petra Praise: The Rock Cries Out marked a turn towards modern-sounding worship music that would soon explode into the modern worship movement.
Petra was nominated for and won numerous Grammy and Dove Awards. In 1991, after the release of their acclaimed Beyond Belief record, Petra became the first rock band ever to win for Group of the Year at the Dove Awards. They were also the first Christian rock band to be inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame.
For three decades Petra continued to produce albums despite changes in their line-up as well as the genre and market. On May 24th, 2005 Petra announced their retirement after 33 years of ministry. They recorded one of their final performances in Franklin, Tennessee to release it as their last album, Farewell. Their last performance finished in the early hours of January 1, 2006 in Murphy, North Carolina. Bob Hartman and John Schlitt continue to tour under the moniker II Guys From Petra.

Kenaniah
Petra Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Words by Bob Hartman, John Lawry, and Danny Kingen
Based on 1 Chronicles 15:22,27
Kenaniah of the Levites appointed by the king
To teach the songs of Zion, to lead them as they sing
Your song is not forgotten, we hear it in our souls
Let it burn and burn within us
Kenaniah, Kenaniah, we will sing your ancient song
Kenaniah, Kenaniah, we will sing it loud and strong
Gathered for the battle, Kenaniah led the way
As the singers closely followed him, they all began to pray
The musicians all assembled, Kenaniah gave the word
Through the raging battle zone, the anthem could be heard
Kenaniah, Kenaniah, we will never let it die
Kenaniah, Kenaniah, we must lift it to the sky
Sing unto Jehovah of His wondrous ways
Sing a song of triumph, sing a victory song
And in the cloud of witnesses, Kenaniah sings along
Kenaniah, Kenaniah, through the ages it will ring
Kenaniah, Kenaniah, to Jehovah we will sing
The song "Kenaniah" by Petra is a tribute to a Levite named Kenaniah who was appointed by the king to lead and teach the songs of Zion. The song talks about how his powerful and ancient song is not forgotten, and it still lives on in the souls of the people. The lyrics call for the song to be remembered and kept alive, to "let it burn and burn within us and fan the sacred coals."
In the second verse, Kenaniah is shown leading the singers into battle, where his anthem can be heard through the raging battle zone. The song talks about how the musicians all assembled, and Kenaniah gave the word, and they all began to pray. The chorus repeats the importance of keeping his song alive and singing it loud and strong, "Kenaniah, Kenaniah, we will never let it die... we must lift it to the sky."
The lyrics suggest that Kenaniah's song is an inspiration to those who hear it. It is a powerful combination of music, prayer, and worship that can be used to inspire and uplift spirits in any situation. The song calls its listeners to sing unto Jehovah of his wondrous ways, and to sing a song of triumph and victory.

I named my son after the Bible persona, and this song. He is seven and loves the Lord. In school he had a sentence to write that started, "I am special because . . ." He wrote, "I am special because my name comes from the Bible." please pray for him, and his brother Isaiah that they keep the Faith even through teenagehood and beyond. God's Blessings on everyone!
@ZemaLemon
RoseOSharon how is he doing now?
@ZenMasterChip
Zema... yes, it would be interesting... I think my wife mistakenly named our daughter both (I think) from an old move "Desiree" and perhaps as an indicator of her origins... I married her when she was pregnant (now 44 yrs ago); I'm the girl's "step father" and her only "real father"... The seed father spent most of his life in jail. :-/ And the ramifications of her name... well... we love her; but... and I'll leave it at that. π I tried but as they say, the acorn doesn't fall far from the tree.. :-( However, as my wife says, "Any man can plant a seed; but, it takes a real man to be a father." She's doing much better; finally... but it isn't the first time I've said that. π’ She needs a lot of prayers, more than mine and her mom's.

My wife and I named our daughter Kenaniah due to this song. We met when we were both D.J's at a Christian radio station when the song came out.
