1) Petra is a Christian Rock band formed in 1972 by Bob Hartman, Bill Glover, John DeGroff, and Greg Hough. "Petra" means "rock" in NT Greek, making the band name a triple pun. Rising from the Jesus music movement, and initially signed to [recordlabel]Myrrh Records[/recordlabel], they fought to gain acceptance and recognition in a church culture that at the time believed rock music to be off-limits. Over time they eventually won over most of their critics, thanks to a steady approach and some solid adult contemporary airplay hits like "The Coloring Song," outside of their usual rock fare. By the mid-80's, when lead singer Greg X. Volz left the band and was replaced by John Schlitt, Petra had solidified their place as the foremost Christian rock band in the industry with a string of hit albums and singles and strong touring. The release of Petra Praise: The Rock Cries Out marked a turn towards modern-sounding worship music that would soon explode into the modern worship movement.
Petra was nominated for and won numerous Grammy and Dove Awards. In 1991, after the release of their acclaimed Beyond Belief record, Petra became the first rock band ever to win for Group of the Year at the Dove Awards. They were also the first Christian rock band to be inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame.
For three decades Petra continued to produce albums despite changes in their line-up as well as the genre and market. On May 24th, 2005 Petra announced their retirement after 33 years of ministry. They recorded one of their final performances in Franklin, Tennessee to release it as their last album, Farewell. Their last performance finished in the early hours of January 1, 2006 in Murphy, North Carolina. Bob Hartman and John Schlitt continue to tour under the moniker II Guys From Petra.

Last Daze
Petra Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Based on 1 Timothy 4:1, 2 Thessalonians 2:11, 2 Timothy 4:3-4
Somewhere in the darkest night a stranger has lost the way
Cold wind and a distant light has carried his heart away
Some say he was one of us, a prodigal gone astray
But inside he's as cold as ice to the truth that he won't obey
He won't discern - the point of no return
(Chorus)
In the last daze - the final haze
There was strong delusion to believe a lie
In the last daze before the blaze
They couldn't see beyond their misty trance
To grab the truth and have a fighting chance
In the last daze
Cold chills when the Spirit speaks that some shall depart from the faith
All ends in calamity just when they thought it was safe
They followed the lies - the fables men devised
Some say it's a certainty, a sign of the times I am told
But I weep for the souls of those who will never return to the fold
Petra's "Last Daze" is a powerful song with a warning message about the consequences of ignoring the truth and falling into deception. The lyrics are based on several biblical verses, including 1 Timothy 4:1, 2 Thessalonians 2:11, and 2 Timothy 4:3-4, and they tell the story of a lost stranger who has been misled by the lies of the world. The song describes the danger of being caught in the last days before the imminent blaze of destruction and not discerning the truth from the lies.
The opening lines describe the stranger's situation as lost, both physically and spiritually. He has strayed from the right path and has become cold-hearted towards the truth that he once knew. He is now caught up in the delusion and haze that the last days bring, unable to distinguish the truth from the lies. The chorus warns of the danger of being caught up in a strong delusion to believe a lie, leading to a doomed fate in the final blaze of judgment. The song encourages the listener to grab onto the truth and fight back against the misty trance of deception.
The second verse mentions the cold chills that result when the Spirit speaks of those who depart from the faith, often leading to calamity. The lies and fables that men devise can lead people astray and cause them to fall away from the truth. The song concludes with a heartfelt plea for the souls of those who have been misled never to return to the fold.
Overall, Petra's "Last Daze" provides a cautionary message about the dangers of disobedience and deception, emphasizing the need to stay vigilant and grounded in the truth.
