1) Petra is a Christian Rock band formed in 1972 by Bob Hartman, Bill Glover, John DeGroff, and Greg Hough. "Petra" means "rock" in NT Greek, making the band name a triple pun. Rising from the Jesus music movement, and initially signed to [recordlabel]Myrrh Records[/recordlabel], they fought to gain acceptance and recognition in a church culture that at the time believed rock music to be off-limits. Over time they eventually won over most of their critics, thanks to a steady approach and some solid adult contemporary airplay hits like "The Coloring Song," outside of their usual rock fare. By the mid-80's, when lead singer Greg X. Volz left the band and was replaced by John Schlitt, Petra had solidified their place as the foremost Christian rock band in the industry with a string of hit albums and singles and strong touring. The release of Petra Praise: The Rock Cries Out marked a turn towards modern-sounding worship music that would soon explode into the modern worship movement.
Petra was nominated for and won numerous Grammy and Dove Awards. In 1991, after the release of their acclaimed Beyond Belief record, Petra became the first rock band ever to win for Group of the Year at the Dove Awards. They were also the first Christian rock band to be inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame.
For three decades Petra continued to produce albums despite changes in their line-up as well as the genre and market. On May 24th, 2005 Petra announced their retirement after 33 years of ministry. They recorded one of their final performances in Franklin, Tennessee to release it as their last album, Farewell. Their last performance finished in the early hours of January 1, 2006 in Murphy, North Carolina. Bob Hartman and John Schlitt continue to tour under the moniker II Guys From Petra.

Let Everything That Hath Breath
Petra Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Let every creature under God's sun praise the Lord
Let all the mountains, let all the valleys
Let all the hillsides sing of His glory
Let everything that has breath praise the Lord
Israel had a war to fight but the Lord showed them the secret
He said the battle this day is mine, but you must listen how to do it
Let them praise and sing to me
And you will see the salvation of your God
And watch your enemies flee
Paul and Silas were thrown in jail
For preaching the gospel of Christ
Though in chains they praised His name singing songs in the night
Just then an earthquake shook the place and the chains and the doors were loosened
Then the jailer ran in scared to and that day he found salvation
Petra's song "Let Everything That Hath Breath" is a Gospel rock anthem that encourages all living creatures to praise God. The song is based on Psalm 150 which proclaims "let everything that hath breath praise the Lord." The lyrics reiterate this message, urging all creatures under God's sun, whether they be the valleys, hillsides, or mountains, to sing of God's glory.
The song also tells the stories of Israel's war and Paul and Silas' imprisonment. God instructs Israel to put their singers in the front lines to praise Him, and they will see salvation and victory over their enemies. Similarly, Paul and Silas praise God in the midst of their suffering but are rewarded with freedom and salvation.
The song echoes the sentiment of the Book of Romans 8:19 that says, "For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed." Petra emphasizes that praise is not just something reserved for humans, but for all living things that have breath in their lungs.
In conclusion, Petra's "Let Everything That Hath Breath" is a powerful and unifying song that encourages the celebration of God's glory in all. It reminds us that praise is not just limited to humans, but rather encouraged of all creatures.

Well actually, He didn't show them this secret. He didn't tell them to put the singers first, only to go out and face the enemies. Actually it was the King Jehoshaphat who, after consulting the people, appointed men to sing to the Lord and to praise him for the splendor of His holiness as they went out at the head of the army. So even before they decided this worship thing, the Lord had already made His decision to defeat the enemies amd informed the King thereof.
This is a tricky one. Be careful not to believe in worshipping itself and start worshipping your own worshipping besides the Lord Himself.
