1) Petra is a Christian Rock band formed in 1972 by Bob Hartman, Bill Glover, John DeGroff, and Greg Hough. "Petra" means "rock" in NT Greek, making the band name a triple pun. Rising from the Jesus music movement, and initially signed to [recordlabel]Myrrh Records[/recordlabel], they fought to gain acceptance and recognition in a church culture that at the time believed rock music to be off-limits. Over time they eventually won over most of their critics, thanks to a steady approach and some solid adult contemporary airplay hits like "The Coloring Song," outside of their usual rock fare. By the mid-80's, when lead singer Greg X. Volz left the band and was replaced by John Schlitt, Petra had solidified their place as the foremost Christian rock band in the industry with a string of hit albums and singles and strong touring. The release of Petra Praise: The Rock Cries Out marked a turn towards modern-sounding worship music that would soon explode into the modern worship movement.
Petra was nominated for and won numerous Grammy and Dove Awards. In 1991, after the release of their acclaimed Beyond Belief record, Petra became the first rock band ever to win for Group of the Year at the Dove Awards. They were also the first Christian rock band to be inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame.
For three decades Petra continued to produce albums despite changes in their line-up as well as the genre and market. On May 24th, 2005 Petra announced their retirement after 33 years of ministry. They recorded one of their final performances in Franklin, Tennessee to release it as their last album, Farewell. Their last performance finished in the early hours of January 1, 2006 in Murphy, North Carolina. Bob Hartman and John Schlitt continue to tour under the moniker II Guys From Petra.

Marks of the Cross
Petra Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And true devotion and passionate fervor are seldom found
But there are those who often feel they're all alone
Those of whose identities are known
By the mark of the crucified Son
Praying, caring, loving, sharing
These are the marks of the cross, ohh
To lay down your life on the line
Forgetting what you leave behind
And willing to suffer the loss
Of the marks of the cross
These days the search for detachment and solitude
Lead to retreating to fortresses no one would dare intrude
Then there are those whose restless burdens start to show
Those who unmistakably must know
There's no crown 'til we sugger the cross
Praying, caring, loving, sharing
These are the marks of the cross, ohh
Giving, bearing, feeling, daring
To lay down your life on the line
Forgetting what you leave behind
And willing to suffer the loss
Of the marks of the cross
All our identity rest in the knowledge
Of who we're created to be
We are His workmanship, made in His image
For all of creation to see
The marks of His pain and His glory
Praying, caring, loving, sharing
These are the marks of the cross, ohh
Giving, bearing, feeling, daring
To lay down your life on the line
Forgetting what you leave behind
And willing to suffer the loss
And the marks of the cross
Praying, caring, loving, sharing
These are the marks of the cross, ohh
The song "Marks of the Cross" by Petra is a call to Christians to remember the true meaning of devotion and passion in their faith. The opening lines speak of the prevalence of shallow and feeble resolve in the world, with true devotion and passionate fervor being rare. However, there are still those whose identities are known by the marks of the crucified Son, those who are willing to pray, care, love, and share. The song emphasizes that these actions are the true marks of the cross and, in order to lay down one's life for Christ, we must be willing to suffer the loss of our own desires and priorities.
The second verse speaks of the dangers of retreating to isolation and detachment, suggesting that we must be willing to bear the burdens of our restless souls and know that there is no crown until we have suffered the cross. The bridge emphasizes that our identity and purpose in life rest in the knowledge that we are God's workmanship, created in His image for all of creation to see. The pain and glory of Christ's crucifixion are reflected in the marks of the cross that we bear.
Overall, "Marks of the Cross" is a reminder to Christians that true devotion and passion for God require sacrifice, selflessness, and a willingness to suffer. The song encourages believers to embrace these qualities as the true marks of a life devoted to Christ.

最近我常在車上聽 Petra 以及 TYE TIBBETT 的歌
如果你與我一樣,早先沒有聽聞過這兩個樂團,
剛聽到這首歌時會以為是哪個一般熱門的 ROCK BAND
這個樂團卻是個道道地地的CHRISTIAN ROCK BAND.
