1) Petra is a Christian Rock band formed in 1972 by Bob Hartman, Bill Glover, John DeGroff, and Greg Hough. "Petra" means "rock" in NT Greek, making the band name a triple pun. Rising from the Jesus music movement, and initially signed to [recordlabel]Myrrh Records[/recordlabel], they fought to gain acceptance and recognition in a church culture that at the time believed rock music to be off-limits. Over time they eventually won over most of their critics, thanks to a steady approach and some solid adult contemporary airplay hits like "The Coloring Song," outside of their usual rock fare. By the mid-80's, when lead singer Greg X. Volz left the band and was replaced by John Schlitt, Petra had solidified their place as the foremost Christian rock band in the industry with a string of hit albums and singles and strong touring. The release of Petra Praise: The Rock Cries Out marked a turn towards modern-sounding worship music that would soon explode into the modern worship movement.
Petra was nominated for and won numerous Grammy and Dove Awards. In 1991, after the release of their acclaimed Beyond Belief record, Petra became the first rock band ever to win for Group of the Year at the Dove Awards. They were also the first Christian rock band to be inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame.
For three decades Petra continued to produce albums despite changes in their line-up as well as the genre and market. On May 24th, 2005 Petra announced their retirement after 33 years of ministry. They recorded one of their final performances in Franklin, Tennessee to release it as their last album, Farewell. Their last performance finished in the early hours of January 1, 2006 in Murphy, North Carolina. Bob Hartman and John Schlitt continue to tour under the moniker II Guys From Petra.

NEVER SAY DIE
Petra Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
All the promises you made that you couldn't keep
And you're feeling sorry for yourself
Think He's done with you, had Him on the shelf
And you're tired of running the race
Straying to and fro, falling on your face
Oh, you want to throw your towel on in
Brother before you do, you better think again
Never say die, no
You've come too far to turn back now
Give it one more try and He'll help you through
Never say die, no
We are weak but He is strong
and strength He will supply
When you ask Him to
You went wrong, you remember when
Instead of pressing toward the mark you missed it once again
And you think that you're the only one
Who's ever come your way and done what you have done
So you try to tuck your tail and run
But then you realize you're back where you've begun
Oh can't you see Him waiting there for you?
With arms wide open now, wanting to see you through
Press on, press on
Keep your hand upon that plow
Press on, press on
And he will lead you through somehow
Petra's song, Never Say Die is a message of hope for those who feel they have failed and let God down. The lyrics start by describing a person who is wrestling with guilt and regret for breaking promises they made to God. They feel like they have given up on themselves and that God has given up on them too. The chorus of the song becomes a rallying cry to encourage the listener to keep on moving forward, to never give up and to keep their faith in God. Petra is reminding her listeners that God is always ready to forgive, and that it's never too late to start again.
The verse of the song talks about the moments of weakness and how human beings fail constantly. Petra reminds us that we are all equally flawed and that we all make mistakes, but it is never too late to ask for forgiveness and try again. Petra also offers a solution for people struggling with the sense of inadequacy and unproductivity, she encourages the listener to keep working the fields and never to give in or give up.

This song is so spot on. I struggle so many times and I get very low, knowing I have disobeyed God. I am so weak but His strength is made perfect in our weakness. Amen
