1) Petra is a Christian Rock band formed in 1972 by Bob Hartman, Bill Glover, John DeGroff, and Greg Hough. "Petra" means "rock" in NT Greek, making the band name a triple pun. Rising from the Jesus music movement, and initially signed to [recordlabel]Myrrh Records[/recordlabel], they fought to gain acceptance and recognition in a church culture that at the time believed rock music to be off-limits. Over time they eventually won over most of their critics, thanks to a steady approach and some solid adult contemporary airplay hits like "The Coloring Song," outside of their usual rock fare. By the mid-80's, when lead singer Greg X. Volz left the band and was replaced by John Schlitt, Petra had solidified their place as the foremost Christian rock band in the industry with a string of hit albums and singles and strong touring. The release of Petra Praise: The Rock Cries Out marked a turn towards modern-sounding worship music that would soon explode into the modern worship movement.
Petra was nominated for and won numerous Grammy and Dove Awards. In 1991, after the release of their acclaimed Beyond Belief record, Petra became the first rock band ever to win for Group of the Year at the Dove Awards. They were also the first Christian rock band to be inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame.
For three decades Petra continued to produce albums despite changes in their line-up as well as the genre and market. On May 24th, 2005 Petra announced their retirement after 33 years of ministry. They recorded one of their final performances in Franklin, Tennessee to release it as their last album, Farewell. Their last performance finished in the early hours of January 1, 2006 in Murphy, North Carolina. Bob Hartman and John Schlitt continue to tour under the moniker II Guys From Petra.

Petra Lyrics

Based on 1 Peter 3:15, 2 Timothy 4:2
Enough of the sidelines, gotta get in the game
When nothing is ventured, nothing is gained
He's callin' the numbers play by play
We're either out or we're in all the way
Nothing can equal the worth of the lost
Shoulder to shoulder, hand to the plow
Today is the day and the right time is now
And the field is ready for the new reserve
We will bring the harvest with a will to serve
(Chorus)
Ready, willing and able
To advance the light and defend the right
Ready, willing and able
Lifting up the cross to the waiting lost
Ready to serve and willing to go
Able to stand against the foe
Ready, willing and able
Instant in season drop of a hat
Bases are loaded, it's our turn at bat
Pressure is mounting, the tension is hot
Heaven is watching to see what we've got
There is strength in numbers
There is hope in One
We are called and chosen to proclaim His Son
He's already given us all that we need
With love in our message and hope in our creed
When Yahweh is for us and faith is our stay
No power below us can stand in our way
In the song "Ready Willing And Able" by Petra, the lyrics are about being ready and available to advance the light and defend what is right. It emphasizes the importance of taking action and not just being on the sidelines watching things happen. The song encourages listeners to step out of their comfort zone and be a part of something bigger. It references verses from the Bible, 1 Peter 3:15 and 2 Timothy 4:2, which remind Christians to always be ready to proclaim their faith and that they will be held accountable for it.
The lyrics encourage believers to be proactive, to get involved and be committed to their faith. It suggests that Christians should be willing to take risks, work hard, and sacrifice. The song acknowledges that there will be challenges to face and that the stakes are high, but it reinforces the belief that God is with them every step of the way. The chorus emphasizes the importance of being ready, willing, and able to serve and stand against the foe.
In summary, the song "Ready Willing And Able" by Petra is about stepping up and being a part of something important. It reminds us that we have been given everything we need to succeed and encourages us to use our gifts and talents to serve God and further His kingdom.

Back in the Day
I remember listening to this song in our youth leaders van on a road trip from Geneva, NY to Dallas, TX to attend Youth For The Nations at Christ For The Nations seminary school. How I wish I could go back and undo all the backsliding I did after I became a Christian.
