1) Petra is a Christian Rock band formed in 1972 by Bob Hartman, Bill Glover, John DeGroff, and Greg Hough. "Petra" means "rock" in NT Greek, making the band name a triple pun. Rising from the Jesus music movement, and initially signed to [recordlabel]Myrrh Records[/recordlabel], they fought to gain acceptance and recognition in a church culture that at the time believed rock music to be off-limits. Over time they eventually won over most of their critics, thanks to a steady approach and some solid adult contemporary airplay hits like "The Coloring Song," outside of their usual rock fare. By the mid-80's, when lead singer Greg X. Volz left the band and was replaced by John Schlitt, Petra had solidified their place as the foremost Christian rock band in the industry with a string of hit albums and singles and strong touring. The release of Petra Praise: The Rock Cries Out marked a turn towards modern-sounding worship music that would soon explode into the modern worship movement.
Petra was nominated for and won numerous Grammy and Dove Awards. In 1991, after the release of their acclaimed Beyond Belief record, Petra became the first rock band ever to win for Group of the Year at the Dove Awards. They were also the first Christian rock band to be inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame.
For three decades Petra continued to produce albums despite changes in their line-up as well as the genre and market. On May 24th, 2005 Petra announced their retirement after 33 years of ministry. They recorded one of their final performances in Franklin, Tennessee to release it as their last album, Farewell. Their last performance finished in the early hours of January 1, 2006 in Murphy, North Carolina. Bob Hartman and John Schlitt continue to tour under the moniker II Guys From Petra.

Run for Cover
Petra Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The flashing warning sign that you would not obey
You ran the roadblock before the danger zone
You cut the lifeline - now you're on your own
[Chorus]
Run for cover, better get under authority
Run for cover, better listen to somebody
With no one to tell you if you're wrong or right
Run for cover
You want to call the shots, you want to take control
You want to throw the dice and gamble with your soul
Taking the liberties that grace will not afford
Is He your Master, can you call Him Lord?
Why do you stand out in the rain
What do you think you have to gain
When you try in your own strength but don't prevail
The arm of flesh will always fail
The lyrics of Petra's song Run for Cover convey a warning message to listeners about the dangers of deviating from the guidelines set by authority figures. The song begins by addressing the listener's recklessness, perhaps implying that they had ignored a warning sign or disobeyed an order. The decision to ignore the warning has left them vulnerable and without support - they "cut the lifeline," and they are now "on their own."
Throughout the song, the chorus emphasizes the importance of heeding the advice of those in positions of authority. The lyrics suggest that those who don't follow such advice are taking a dangerous risk and should "run for cover" by finding someone to guide them. The song warns listeners against taking control and gambling with their lives, urging them to call on God as their authority and not to rely on their own strength. Finally, the bridge underlines that personal strength is limited and will "always fail" and encourages the listener to surrender to a higher authority.

My Parody version "Run From Cover"
You must have seen the light somewhere along the way
The flashing warning sign that told you not to obey
You ran the roadblock before the danger zone
You cut the lifeline -now they Run Your Soul
Run From cover! - just get away from authority
Run from cover - don't have to listen to anybody
Like the mindless lemming always rushing off the cliff
without your judgement to get you out of it!
Run from cover!
You want them to call the shots -
you want them to take control
You want to throw the dice and gamble with your soul
Acting like there is something that grace will not afford
Is your Pastor your Master,
Do you call him Lord?
Why do you follow silly crowdthink?
What do you think you have to gain?
When you trust others to lead you through the veil
The arm of corruption will always fail

Greg X Volz Is Still A Good Singer Even Though John Schlitt Took Over Lead Vocals ... 1986 - 2003
@brianodum4245
Totally different sound. Greg was more polished with that soaring "Journey" sound. John was more gravelly rock. I love them both. Part of Petra's durability was how they adapted over the years. They will always be my all time favorite band!
