1) Petra is a Christian Rock band formed in 1972 by Bob Hartman, Bill Glover, John DeGroff, and Greg Hough. "Petra" means "rock" in NT Greek, making the band name a triple pun. Rising from the Jesus music movement, and initially signed to [recordlabel]Myrrh Records[/recordlabel], they fought to gain acceptance and recognition in a church culture that at the time believed rock music to be off-limits. Over time they eventually won over most of their critics, thanks to a steady approach and some solid adult contemporary airplay hits like "The Coloring Song," outside of their usual rock fare. By the mid-80's, when lead singer Greg X. Volz left the band and was replaced by John Schlitt, Petra had solidified their place as the foremost Christian rock band in the industry with a string of hit albums and singles and strong touring. The release of Petra Praise: The Rock Cries Out marked a turn towards modern-sounding worship music that would soon explode into the modern worship movement.
Petra was nominated for and won numerous Grammy and Dove Awards. In 1991, after the release of their acclaimed Beyond Belief record, Petra became the first rock band ever to win for Group of the Year at the Dove Awards. They were also the first Christian rock band to be inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame.
For three decades Petra continued to produce albums despite changes in their line-up as well as the genre and market. On May 24th, 2005 Petra announced their retirement after 33 years of ministry. They recorded one of their final performances in Franklin, Tennessee to release it as their last album, Farewell. Their last performance finished in the early hours of January 1, 2006 in Murphy, North Carolina. Bob Hartman and John Schlitt continue to tour under the moniker II Guys From Petra.

Storm Comin
Petra Lyrics

Daylight in my eyes and it seemed to be really bright
I went to the window and I looked up in the sky
I saw the angels coming but I knew it wasn't time to die
I took a look around I saw the clouds begin to form
I knew we must be near the end because the clouds come before the storm
I know the time is near
Storm comin'
And it's coming our way
Storm comin'
And it might come today
(look out, here it comes)
I know my days are numbered
And I haven't got long to roam
It seems like quite a while I've been feeling like I want to go home
I'm just waiting for the day when Jesus will come and take me by the hand
There's no need to worry, He's gonna take me to the promise land
I hope you'll be there too
Jesus is waiting for you
Storm comin'
And it's coming our way
Storm comin'
And it might come today
(look out, here it comes)
Petra's song "Storm Comin'" talks about the coming of the end times and the return of Jesus Christ. The song begins with the singer waking up feeling right and seeing the daylight. Looking up in the sky, the singer sees angels, but knows it isn't time to die. The clouds begin to form, a sign that the storm is coming. The singer knows the time is near and soon lightning and thunder will be heard.
The lyrics express a sense of urgency and anticipation towards the return of Jesus Christ. The singer seems ready to go and is waiting for the day when Jesus will come and take them by the hand. It's a message of hope to everyone that Jesus is waiting for us and will take us to the promise land, where there's no need to worry.
The song's title and chorus, "Storm Comin'," are a metaphor for the end times and the coming of Jesus. The storm represents the chaos and destruction that will come, and Jesus represents the calm and peace that will follow. The overall message of the song is one of hope and faith in the promise of eternal life through Christ.

Once the initial shock of hearing this wore off, I cranked this album quite a bit. It's totally unlike what they did in the 80's/90's, but I enjoyed it, it was fun and didn't take itself too seriously. :)

Wow! Yeah, Wikipedia says Petra was comparable to the popular acts at the time and mentioned the Allman Brothers, which I can also hear in this song. But more than anything I hear great similarities to a couple of songs by the Grateful Dead. What a great alternative!
