1) Petra is a Christian Rock band formed in 1972 by Bob Hartman, Bill Glover, John DeGroff, and Greg Hough. "Petra" means "rock" in NT Greek, making the band name a triple pun. Rising from the Jesus music movement, and initially signed to [recordlabel]Myrrh Records[/recordlabel], they fought to gain acceptance and recognition in a church culture that at the time believed rock music to be off-limits. Over time they eventually won over most of their critics, thanks to a steady approach and some solid adult contemporary airplay hits like "The Coloring Song," outside of their usual rock fare. By the mid-80's, when lead singer Greg X. Volz left the band and was replaced by John Schlitt, Petra had solidified their place as the foremost Christian rock band in the industry with a string of hit albums and singles and strong touring. The release of Petra Praise: The Rock Cries Out marked a turn towards modern-sounding worship music that would soon explode into the modern worship movement.
Petra was nominated for and won numerous Grammy and Dove Awards. In 1991, after the release of their acclaimed Beyond Belief record, Petra became the first rock band ever to win for Group of the Year at the Dove Awards. They were also the first Christian rock band to be inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame.
For three decades Petra continued to produce albums despite changes in their line-up as well as the genre and market. On May 24th, 2005 Petra announced their retirement after 33 years of ministry. They recorded one of their final performances in Franklin, Tennessee to release it as their last album, Farewell. Their last performance finished in the early hours of January 1, 2006 in Murphy, North Carolina. Bob Hartman and John Schlitt continue to tour under the moniker II Guys From Petra.

Why Should The Father Bother
Petra Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Why should the Spirit hear it when we pray?
Why should the Father bother to be concerned with all our needs?
It's all because of what the Son has done
Once we were lost out on the ocean with no direction or devotion
Tossed about by every wind and wave
Now we are in the world not of it and we can surely rise above it
Why should the Father bother to call us His children?
Why should the Spirit hear it when we pray?
Why should the Father bother to be concerned with all our needs?
It's all because of what the Son has done
And we cry "Abba Father, Abba Father
Abba Father, Abba Father"
We cry "Abba Father, Abba Father
Abba Father, Abba Father"
Once we were strangers from the promise
We were doubters worse than Thomas till the Spirit opened up our eyes
Now he has offered us Adoption
And we have taken up the option to be His family eternally
Why should the Father bother to call us His children?
Why should the Spirit hear it when we pray?
Why should the Father bother to be concerned with all our needs?
It's all because of what the Son has done
It's all because of what the Son has done
The lyrics of Petra's song "Why Should The Father Bother" speak to the love and grace extended to humanity by God, specifically through the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The song poses the questions of why God would bother calling us His children and hearing our prayers and being concerned about our needs. The answer is that it's all because of what the Son has done. The song describes how once we were lost, without direction or devotion, and tossed about by every wind and wave, but now we are in the world but not of it, able to rise above it because of the Lord's resurrection. The song also speaks to the idea of adoption, how we were once strangers from the promise and doubters but, through the Spirit, our eyes were opened and we were offered the option to be a part of God's family eternally.

My first time hearing it. I was a Mormon in the 70, 80's and 90's so I missed out on some wonderful Christian Music. I'm so glad I found it.
@johniorio7951
love the mormons...just have a problem with them adding on to the bible...but they do great things...same with the jehovah witnesses...me, I am pentecostal, but some of us go off track...like picking up snakes.....stick to the Bible and you can't go wrong.
@WhatNow858
Abba means "Daddy" in the Greek. For someone who never had a father in their life, it is precious to mean that God will let me call him Daddy.
@hitmakero

That’s being filled with the Holy Spirit - it’s a natural high that many people seek in the wrong way. There’s another 70’s and 80’s contemporary Christian artist named Leon Patillo who wrote a song called “High on You” It has the wrong artwork on one of the videos, but it is really good.
