Am I That Easy to Forget
Petula Clark Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
But that won't stop me loving you
I just can't let you walk away
Forget the love I had for you
Guess I could find somebody, too
But I don't want no one but you
How could you leave without regret
Before you leave be sure you find
You want his love much more than mine
'Cause I'll just say we've never met
If I'm that easy to forget
If I'm that easy to forget
These lyrics speak to the heartbreak of a person who is being left by someone they love deeply, and are struggling to understand why it's so easy for them to simply walk away. The singer acknowledges that their love interest has found someone new, but their own love for them refuses to let them simply forget the feelings that they once had. The internal conflict that the singer faces is highlighted in the contrast between their certainty that they could find someone else, but their unwillingness to do so since their heart still belongs to the other person.
The singer pleads for their love interest to take a moment and consider whether they truly want to leave for good or if they simply think they have found someone better in the moment. The fear of being forgotten or replaced easily is palpable, and they challenge their lover to consider if the new love is truly worth ending what they had together. The final line, "If I'm that easy to forget," is a stark reminder of the fragility of love, and how quickly things can fall apart.
