Don't Sleep In The Subway
Petula Clark Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You wander around on your own little cloud
When you don't see the why or the wherefore
You walk out on me when we both disagree
'Cause to reason is not what you care for

I've heard it all a million times before
Take off your coat, my love, and close the door
Don't sleep in the subway, darlin'
Don't stand in the pouring rain
Don't sleep in the subway, darlin'
The night is long
Forget your foolish pride
Nothing's wrong
Now you're beside me again

You try to be smart, then you take it to heart
'Cause it hurts when your ego is deflated
Ooh, you don't realize that it's all compromise
And the problems are so overrated

Goodbye means nothing when it's all for show
So why pretend you've somewhere else to go

Don't sleep in the subway, darlin'
Don't stand in the pouring rain
Don't sleep in the subway, darlin'
The night is long
Forget your foolish pride
Nothing's wrong
Now you're beside me again

Don't sleep in the subway, darlin'
Don't stand in the pouring rain
Don't sleep in the subway, darlin'
The night is long
Forget your foolish pride
Nothing's wrong
Now you're beside me again
Oh
Don't sleep in the subway, darlin'

Don't stand in the pouring rain
Don't sleep in the subway, darlin'

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Petula Clark's song "Don't Sleep In The Subway" depict a story of a couple who argues and breaks up due to their differences in opinions and stubbornness. The first verse describes the stubbornness of the partner who is living in their own little world and doesn't bother to reason out their problems. This attitude leads to friction between the couple, and they eventually break up. The singer tries to convince their partner to stay with them and not to sleep in the subway or stand in the pouring rain. They ask the partner to forget their foolish pride and come back to them.

The second verse highlights the partner's ego and their tendency to take things personally. They fail to understand that relationships thrive on compromise and think the problems are blown out of proportion. The singer tries to communicate that saying goodbye is meaningless when it is just for show and asks the partner not to pretend they have somewhere else to go. The song's chorus repeats the plea not to sleep in the subway or stand in the pouring rain and emphasizes the importance of being together.

The song's lyrics present a classic narrative of the need for communication and compromise in relationships to overcome differences. It highlights the importance of being humble, understanding, and forgiving, and is a reminder that pride can ruin relationships if not checked.

When you say Petula Clark, people immediately think 'Downtown'. Personally , I think this is her best song. A beautiful, classic 60s melody. An absolute favourite.

@scronx

Yes! Honestly I've always found Downtown depressing. Its other bookend I Know A Place is terrifically upbeat :)
