She started her professional career as a child performer and has had one of the longest careers of any British entertainer, spanning more than eight decades. Clark's professional career began during the Second World War as a child entertainer on BBC Radio. In 1954 she charted with "The Little Shoemaker", the first of her big UK hits, and within two years she began recording in French. Her international successes have included "Prends mon cœur", "Sailor" (a UK number one), "Romeo", and "Chariot". Hits in German, Italian, and Spanish followed. In late 1964 Clark's success extended to the United States with a four-year run of career-defining, often upbeat singles, many written or co-written by Tony Hatch and Jackie Trent. These include her signature song "Downtown" (US number one), "I Know a Place", "My Love" (US number one), "A Sign of the Times", "I Couldn't Live Without Your Love", "Who Am I", "Colour My World", "This Is My Song" (by Charlie Chaplin) (a UK number one), "Don't Sleep in the Subway", "The Other Man's Grass Is Always Greener" and "Kiss Me Goodbye". Between January 1965 and April 1968 Clark charted with nine US Top 20 hits in the US, where she was sometimes called "the First Lady of the British Invasion".

Clark has sold more than 68 million records. She has also enjoyed success in the musical film Finian's Rainbow and in the stage musicals The Sound of Music, Blood Brothers, Sunset Boulevard, and Mary Poppins.

I recently read British journalist Christopher Booker's 1968 book, The Neophiliacs which traces the rise of the Fab Sixties through the events of 1955-1968 in the framework of a collective fantasy (he is a Jungian scholar). @@cassconner6023 we grew up hearing a lot of different music genres as part of the background sounds that going through life involves. From many one-hit wonders to artists and groups that put out music for several years to still others that are still going.
But as a 1959er it all seemed to start in memory in the mid 60's and especially for some unknown reason the music from across the ocean stands out more as part of the earliest music that qualifies as " magic memories".

I was 7 years old when I first heard this song. My mom drove my teenage brother and I downtown to pick up a pizza for our family from Harry’s Pizza late one evening. My brother went in Harry’s to get the pizza and I stayed in the car with mom. Standing up behind her on the backseat floorboard in my pajamas and slippers, looking out at the flashing neon lights of the downtown business, I was enchanted to hear Downtown began to play on the car radio. The moment felt surreal. Every time I hear it now remember that evening and the sweetness and innocence of childhood and the thrill of the downtown lights in the evening.

You're so fortunate that one of the greatest records ever made by ANYBODY can get you to that place. Pro musician here for 53 years. This record always brings me to History class, 8th grade, 1964. All-white middle-class suburban town north of Boston. This record was my first clue that there was something else out there that I was gonna make damn sure to find out about. Bought a guitar, worked hard at it and 10 years later I was playing around Boston every weekend, paying my college tuition and rent, 3 nights a week. Sweet deal. If I had to point to the one single thing that created the drive to forget all my troubles, forget all my cares, it was this record. I'd be willing to bet there's something about this record that had an equally profound impact on your mom, I'd love to hear her story.

I was 5-7 years old and my grandmother would take me downtown (Buffalo NY in the 60s) on the bus because she never learned to drive and never needed to. She took me shopping and they had tea rooms then. She was graceful and has class. When I hear this song I thing of that wonderful woman and what she taught me about life and how to live it.

1964 when this song was playing in every downtown store . My friends I were always singing along and loved it and enjoyed it so much . We were teenagers then and I missed those years so much . How time passes by so quickly. So sad ..

Takes me back when the song was released….. visiting relatives in San Francisco…. I took a walk up Market Street, a bar had this song playing on the jukebox, think it was the jukebox and stood next to the door so I could listen…. Just a young teenager but the memories are burned in the mind…..
