Every Little Bit Hurts
Petula Clark Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Every little bit hurts
Every night I cry
Every night I die
Every night I wonder why
You treat me cold
Yet you won't let me go
Every little hurt does
To you I am a toy
And you're the girl
Who has the say
Why I should play
Yeah you hurt me
Desert me I just can't take
The loneliness you give me
I just can't go
Another night this way
Come back to me
Darlin' you'll see
I can give you all the things
You wanted me for
If you will stay with me
Every little bit hurts
Every little bit hurts
Every night I cry
Every night I die
Every night I wonder why
You treat me cold
Yet you won't let me go
Come back to me
Darlin' you'll see
I can give you all the things
That you wanted me for
If you will stay with me
Every little bit hurts
Every little bit hurts
Every little bit hurts
The song Every Little Bit Hurts, performed by Petula Clark, is an emotional ballad about a relationship that is one-sided and filled with pain. The repetitive verses emphasize the hurt inflicted on the singer, who is seemingly trapped in a toxic and abusive relationship. The phrase "Every little bit hurts" highlights the fact that even small actions can cause significant emotional pain. The singer's tears, suffering, and confusion are evident throughout the song, mirroring the feelings of anyone who has experienced the agony of unreciprocated love.
The lyrics go on to express the singer's willingness to do anything for her partner, even though she is aware that she is being used as a mere plaything. She begs for her partner to come back to her and makes promises to fulfill their desires if they would only reciprocate her feelings. The song is a heartfelt plea for love and connection, as well as a statement on the human tendency to cling to unhealthy relationships.

What a great singer.. timeless..

Petula Clark is a singer, a real singer. What we primarily get today are machines enhancing a voice until you have no idea what the real voice sounds like, and only mechanical interpretations that mostly all sound the same.

Petula's clear yet soulful reading of this amazing track is wonderful to hear . I think Brenda Holloway's version is amazing but this is just as great.

Ellis Hall jr did an excellent remake; nonetheless, Petula Clark sounds heavenly.
