She started her professional career as a child performer and has had one of the longest careers of any British entertainer, spanning more than eight decades. Clark's professional career began during the Second World War as a child entertainer on BBC Radio. In 1954 she charted with "The Little Shoemaker", the first of her big UK hits, and within two years she began recording in French. Her international successes have included "Prends mon cœur", "Sailor" (a UK number one), "Romeo", and "Chariot". Hits in German, Italian, and Spanish followed. In late 1964 Clark's success extended to the United States with a four-year run of career-defining, often upbeat singles, many written or co-written by Tony Hatch and Jackie Trent. These include her signature song "Downtown" (US number one), "I Know a Place", "My Love" (US number one), "A Sign of the Times", "I Couldn't Live Without Your Love", "Who Am I", "Colour My World", "This Is My Song" (by Charlie Chaplin) (a UK number one), "Don't Sleep in the Subway", "The Other Man's Grass Is Always Greener" and "Kiss Me Goodbye". Between January 1965 and April 1968 Clark charted with nine US Top 20 hits in the US, where she was sometimes called "the First Lady of the British Invasion".

Clark has sold more than 68 million records. She has also enjoyed success in the musical film Finian's Rainbow and in the stage musicals The Sound of Music, Blood Brothers, Sunset Boulevard, and Mary Poppins.

This song has been in and out of my life a couple of times. As a young man I was deeply in love , I ended up in the military during Vietnam, and like many young men received a letter explaining that she was having a difficult time sitting and waiting for my return, so I mutually agreed to go our senate ways and maybe we could rekindle our lives once I returned home. It never happened. I came home she gave me a hug and kiss and told me she was leaving for California with someone she had dated even though she had feelings for me. I understood even though it hurt at that time. I met someone and we got married, she was wonderful, but after 10 years she passed away from cancer. I thought my life had ended that day. 32 years old lost both women I loved . Who would want a man with 3 children. I met someone else a couple of years later through mutual friends. We have been married 38 years and my life has been wonderful with her. When I here this song it reminds me of my life and my past. In a strange way I believe I am a lucky man.

This song is about me and my beautiful wife Annie - we met in SIngapore, were together for 2 years and then I left for another assignment never knowing when we would be together again. I remember at the age of 3 I would visit my grandmother. She would play a radio on her nightstand and this song played most every night. It left me with a sad feeling but was so beautiful. Colin...Born British, Wales, I think, but Petula Clark is more French by choice than any other nationality.
I'm here to let you know she sings as many songs in French as she does in English, and all her songs are here on YouTube. Whether or not you speak French, it doesn't matter when it comes to Petula Clark. This song now breaks my heart on a different level. When you are young, you think it will be just boyfriends who break your heart and they do. Then it is more serious lovers and husbands but you don't think friends, siblings or even children but they do too. They really do. At about age 109 when no-one is using a landline, you are waiting for your brother, son, sister to recognise that is how you communicate. I think we all get tired of loving.

Joe I have. I have been luckier than some. I had lovely parents, siblings, a nice childhood, friends and am now on a second reasonably contented marriage. I once moaned to a colleague about losing youth, your child's childhood, looks, ability to dance etc and she just said she had never had any of those things (apart from youth, clearly): no boyfriends, Monday night discos, Saturday night concerts, marriage, child - just a lifetime spent with a parent whom she nursed through his final illness. At the time it made me think. Better to have loved and lost? Still, I still find loss hard.

I listened to this as a teen in the 60's--beautiful song and it was pretty, enjoyable, nice to listen to. Just recently heard it on Sirius actually listening to all the words and just have to say this. To have the emotional strength to sing a song so beautifully striking at the emotional essence of all of us on abandonment, something most all have powerful vulnerabilities/fears about is just incredible. If I ever had the opportunity to tell her, I'd so so. If I sang that song I'd never get through it, in tears. G-D Bless you, Petula.

Time and life move on and people like what they like but I agree this is one beautiful song and Petula had a lovely voice. The Mariah's, Rhianna's, Lady Gaga's, Beyoncé's, Adele's cannot, in my book, compare. The feeling has been stripped out.

'for the last time, pretend you are mine' - that line always gets me - but then again, the whole song is beautifully sad. I was 12 in the September of this year (1968) and then it was just another beautiful Petula song....but over the years since, I have come to realise the full meaning and although a lot of her songs remind me of summer holidays from school, this is one of my faves - the others are Downtown, Don't Sleep In The Subway and The Other Man's Grass Is Always Greener...to name but a few.
