Lucky Day
Petula Clark Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I've always been blue,
But my May time
Has started with you!
I will admit I've had some luck,
But it has always been bad!
All but down luck
I've just had.
Oh boy, I'm lucky,
I'll say I'm lucky,
This is my lucky day!
Now I'm in clover,
I'm glad all over,
I wanna shout, "Hooray!".
I found a horse shoe, couldn't go wrong,
And then, of course, you came along!
Oh boy, I'm lucky,
I'll say I'm lucky,
This is my lucky day!
Oh boy, I'm lucky,
I'll say I'm lucky,
This is my lucky day!
And look at me now I'm in clover,
But I'm glad all over,
Yet I wanna yell, "Hooray!".
And I found a little horse shoe, that's why I couldn't go wrong,
And then you, you little devil, you came along!
Ah-ha, I'm lucky,
I'll say I'm lucky,
This is my lucky day!
Oh boy, I'm lucky,
I'll say I'm lucky,
This is my lucky day!
Oh boy, I'm lucky,
I'll say I'm lucky,
This is my lucky day!
And now I'm in clover,
I'm glad all over,
I wanna shout, "Hey-hey!".
I found a horse shoe, couldn't go wrong,
And then you, you, you happened along!
Oh boy, I'm lucky,
I'll say I'm lucky,
This is my lucky day!
The song Lucky Day by Petula Clark is a joyful tune about finally finding some luck in life. The singer has always been blue, but suddenly things have changed and May (perhaps symbolizing spring and new beginnings) has started with a new person in their life. The singer has had luck in the past, but it has always been bad luck - until now. The discovery of a horseshoe, a classic symbol of good luck, seems to have turned everything around. And then meeting this new person - "you little devil" - makes everything even luckier.
Overall, the song is a celebration of the happy surprises that life can bring. The singer's joy and relief at finally experiencing good luck is infectious. The chorus, with its repeated refrain of "Oh boy, I'm lucky / I'll say I'm lucky / This is my lucky day!" is simple but catchy. The verses are filled with vivid imagery, like the blue of night and day, and the referential tone of "Little Miss Muffet, counting her curds". The song portrays luck almost as a character, something that can change a person's life in an instant.

Pet would do these sort of standards as its what was expected.Maybe she'd rather have done songs that were in the charts-after all we're talking about 1960 when the charts were full of good songs.

I have an LP record that I bought in a supermarket display in early 60s when I became a Pet fan. Unfortunately the recordings were of bland songs such as this which sounded like big band singers not Pet's style.. Still have the record but never play it. - Tom B. Delaware via Brooklyn NY

There's nothing here to make her stand out from any number of pretty girl singers of that period. When did she discover that distinct vocal style that made her such an unmistakable sensation in the 1960s? It's as if Elvis spent the 1950's in a white dinner jacket sounding like Vic Damone, Al Martino, or a host of other cookie-cutter crooners closing out the Swing Era.
