Never On A Sunday
Petula Clark Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh, you can kiss me on a Monday
A Monday, a Monday is very, very good
Or you can kiss me on a Tuesday
A Tuesday, a Tuesday, in fact I wish you would
Or you can kiss me on a Wednesday
A Thursday, a Friday and Saturday is best
But never, never on a Sunday
A Sunday, a Sunday, 'cause that's my day of rest

Most any day you can be my guest
Any day you say, but my day of rest
Just name the day that you like the best
Only stay away on my day of rest

Oh, you can kiss me on a cool day, a hot day
A wet day, which everyone you choose
Or try to kiss me on a gray day, a May day
A pay day, and see if I refuse
And if you make it on a bleak day

A freak day, a week day, why you can be my guest
But never, never on a Sunday

Overall Meaning

The song “Never On A Sunday” by Petula Clark is about a woman who is open to being kissed any day of the week except Sundays. The lyrics suggest that the woman is very busy during the week and needs Sundays to rest. The song starts with the woman suggesting that she would be happy to be kissed on any day of the week, Monday being a very good day to do so. She goes on to mention Tuesdays and Wednesdays as good days as well, but explains that Saturdays are the best days to be kissed. However, she draws the line at Sundays which she considers to be a day of rest.

I always think Melina Merkouri's rendition is the most dramatic and outstanding. Lale Andersen, Peutla, and Connie Francis all give the similar interpretation, too much cheerfulness. Melina blends the sadness, cheefulness and powerlessness into an impeccably beautiful lonely voice of a shunned woman. I don't know what Manos intended to express, but perhaps you can shed the light. I was mightily moved by Melina's rendition.

As someone pointed out downthread, this is an album track, from Petula's 1965 "International Hits" LP. The LP was something of a "concept" album, containing covers of hits mostly associated with other singers. None of the songs were selected for single release. Instead the LP shows her interpretive abilities as a singer. For other tracks from this release, check out her ballad version of "I Want to Hold Your Hand" and her rendition of "You Can't Keep Me From Loving You."
