Other Man's Grass Is Always Greener
Petula Clark Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Life is never what it seems
We're always searching in our dreams
To find that little castle in the air
When worry starts to cloud the mind
It's hard to leave it all behind
And just pretend you haven't got a care

There's someone else in your imagination
You wish that you were standing in their shoes
You'd change your life without much hesitation
But would you if you really had to choose?

So, don't look around, get your feet on the ground
It's much better by far to be just who your are

The other man's grass is always greener
The sun shines brighter on the other side
The other man's grass is always greener
Some are lucky, some are not
Just be thankful for what you've got

Many times it seems to me
There's someone else I'd rather be
Living in a world of make-believe
To stay in bed till nearly three
With nothing there to worry me
Would seem to be the life I might achieve
But deep inside I know I'm really lucky
With happiness I've never known before
And just as long as you are there beside me
I know that I could ask for nothing more

And living can start with the love in your heart
So with you all the time
All the treasures I've longed for are mine

The other man's grass is always greener
The sun shines brighter on the other side
The other man's grass is always greener
Some are lucky, some are not
But, I'm so thankful for what I've got

Yes, the other man's grass is always greener
The sun shines brighter on the other side

The other man's grass is always greener
Some are lucky, some are not

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Petula Clark's "The Other Man's Grass Is Always Greener" is a reflection on the idea that humans always feel like they are missing something in their lives. The song speaks to the notion that people always feel like there is something lacking in their own life, and if they were given the choice, they would swap their circumstances with someone else. However, the song questions the idea of whether they would genuinely be happier if they were in that other person's shoes or if it is merely an illusion of happiness. The lyrics are a message of gratitude, encouraging people to appreciate what they have in their lives instead of always wishing for more.

The song's lyrics are relatable, and the melody is upbeat, making it a quintessential song of the 1960s that still resonates with people today. The chorus of the song echoes the common phrase, "the grass is always greener on the other side," a phrase still in popular use today in everyday language.

Let me say this...
There was never any competition between Petula Clark and Dusty Springfield.
They were really good friends and in fact Petula once recorded a song with Dusty Springfield.
Everyone of us has individual tastes..
"One man's meat is another man's poison."
As it as been written.
PERSONALLY I much prefer the singing of Petula and have been a lifelong fan of Petula.
She just handles every single song she sings with such....
PANACHE.
As a superb singer Petula executes each and every song with such style and with great panache.
Petula can sing any genre of music and excel with every note and word of any song.
Her voice is crystal clear and she dictates every word with awesome
preciseness, the absolute best that I have ever heard of by any other female singer.
PERSONALLY I much prefer the songs of Petula.
They are without any doubt what-so-ever.....
PHENOMENONAL.
SENSATIONAL.
BRILLIANT.
OUTSTANDING.
TREMENDOUS.
FANTASTIC
SUPERB
AWESOME
MAGNIFICENT
ect.

I do like some of Dusty Springfield's songs.
They are very good.
However it will ALWAYS be Petula for me.

Darren Plumpton

@Cliff McAulay Thank you Cliff for your reply.
In my opinion when these three ultra-talented people got together it was nothing short of a stratospheric PHENOMENON.
A great peice of fate that would give the world some of the greatest music that will endure forever.
In my own humble opinion if I was ever asked to name the greatest female vocalist of all time then I wouldn't hesitate to say Petula Clark.
Her voice is pure, perfectly in tune and with a clear tone.
Today's music is so bad that I no longer listen to the charts.
They just don't interest me.
I count myself extremely lucky to have been born at a time that I could really appreciate the music of that time.
That was the (Swinging)Sixties and (Sensational) Seventies.

Darren Plumpton

VERY WELL SAID LUKE!!!!
PETULA CLARK as had one of the Greatest career's of all time.
Blessed with an unmatchable voice and masses of true talent what does she need to do to get herself recognised for one?
Petula was given a CBE to which we know she very much deserves.
HOWEVER ,Your Majesty, Petula as been in Showbusiness for EIGHTY YEARS.
Having recently celebrated her 89th birthday it would be so AWESOME to give some recognition to a TOTALLY Unique career as Petula as had.
PLEASE MA'AM.
ASAP PLEASE.
Thank You.

Jackie Mcmeekin

What a talented singer. I grew up hearing her on TV and on records. These words are so meaningful, so true!

Joe Mac Pherson

Of all the songs Petula Clark recorded, this is The One, that has followed me through most of my life. It resonated with me as a boy of 12, in 1967. Every time I heard it on the AM station WMEX broadcasting from Boston, Massachusetts, I thought about the words and their message. Later, I bought the LP- and after that, the same album on CD. Even now, this song returns to my thoughts when life gives me something better. The words still give me hope for a brighter tomorrow, no matter how long it takes. And Yes, I'm thankful for what I've got!
