Poppa Piccolino
Petula Clark Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Poppa Piccolino, Poppa Piccolino,
He plays so prettily to every signorina
Poppa Piccolino from sunny Italy
Oh listen to the music I hear
Oh. Poppa Piccolino is near
To win a smile or maybe a tear
A vagabond who wanders along
A millionaire, but only in song
As though the world
Might really belong to him
This fellow plays a melody so mellow
That everyone keeps shouting "Bello, Bello"
All over Italy they know his concertina
Poppa Piccolino, Poppa Piccolino,
He plays so prettily to every signorina
Poppa Piccolino from sunny Italy
No matter what the calendars show
It can't be spring, and I ought to know
Until I hear him singing "'allo, `allo I'm here again"
A flower in his battered old hat
And a smile for every doggie and cat
And children get the friendliest pat of all
I'll give his name so if you ever meet him
Then you will know exactly how to greet him
All over Italy they know his concertina
Poppa Piccolino, Poppa Piccolino,
He plays so prettily to every signorina
Poppa Piccolino from sunny Italy
Everybody loves Poppa Piccolino. He has the cutest little monkey to
collect the lira. But one day Poppa Piccolino was very sad. He lost
his concertina, and he couldn't find it anywhere, and there was no
music, and everyone was very unhappy. But the little monkey found it
for him and gave it back to Poppa Piccolino, and now everybody is
happy again.
All over Italy they know his concertina
Poppa Piccolino, Poppa Piccolino,
He plays so prettily to every signorina
Poppa Piccolino from sunny Italy
Sunny Italy, Sunny Italy.
The song "Poppa Piccolino" is an ode to a wandering musician who roams Italy with his concertina, a type of accordion. The song describes him as a vagabond but also as a millionaire in song, suggesting that though he may not have material wealth, his music brings him great joy and fame. The lyrics also note that his music brings happiness to all who hear it, from signorinas to children and even animals.
The chorus of the song repeats the title phrase, making it clear that Poppa Piccolino is a beloved figure all over Italy. The verses describe scenes of him wandering from town to town, always with his concertina in hand and a flower in his hat. The music is described as mellow and pretty, and the crowds that gather to hear him play are always shouting "Bello, Bello!"
The final verse provides a helpful hint on how to greet Poppa Piccolino, should you ever have the good fortune to meet him in person. The song ends with a final repeat of the chorus, emphasizing once again the widespread popularity of this wandering musician.

Went to see Petula Clark at Bridlington Spa about seven years ago when she was aged 83. After a few faltering bars she found her voice and sang and entertained for more than 2 hours. It was a truly memorable evening. The packed theatre gave her a well-deserved standing ovation.
