Romeo
Petula Clark Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I studied Shakespeare
when I was at school
thought Romeo was a pet
Felt if I met him
I'd act like a fool
I'd be a poor Juliet

Now that I know him
I'm not really sure
boy you're as charming as he
Saying the same things
to all the girls
or is it just to me

Romeo,
why am I so in love with you
Romeo,
is it you or the things you do
I've been yours
from the moment you said hello
Are you mine
or just only my Romeo

I studied Shakespeare
when I was at school
thought Romeo was a joy
I liked the true way
he loved Juliet
just my ideal of a boy

You know I like you as my Romeo
that's how I want you to be
but if you're out on some other date
can you be true to me

Romeo,
why am I so in love with you
Romeo,
is it you or the things you do
I've been yours
from the moment you said hello

Are you mine
or just only my Romeo

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Romeo" by Petula Clark explore a young woman's infatuation with a man who she considers to be reminiscent of Shakespeare's iconic Romeo. The song begins by alluding to Shakespeare, with the singer discussing how she studied the famed playwright's works in school, including Romeo and Juliet. She imagined herself to be a hopeless romantic, convinced that if she ever met a man like Romeo, she would act like Juliet and completely lose herself in his love.

However, as she gets to know this particular man, she begins to question whether he is truly charming or just another player, saying the same things to all the girls. She asks him whether he is really hers, or just her Romeo for the moment. Despite her uncertainty, she cannot deny that she is deeply in love with him and has been since the moment they met.

The song touches on the themes of infatuation, love, and romanticism. The singer's adolescent fantasies of love are juxtaposed with her current experiences, and she begins to realize that love and relationships are not always as straightforward as they seem. The story of Romeo and Juliet is used as a reference point, emphasizing the singer's desire for a romantic, idealized love that she is not entirely sure exists.

Overall, "Romeo" is a nostalgic reflection on the power and confusion of first love, with Shakespeare serving as a touchstone for the singer's romantic ideals.

What memories. My dear late mother who was an excellent ballroom dancer taught me how to dance to this song which we both loved. We worked out a pretty nifty routine people used to admire. Father was a useless dancer so Mom and I often took to the floor.
