Aphrodite
Phèdre Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Deep into the bay
It would've been cold
But I was with a starling
Made of 300 karat gold

She had 500 lovers
But I was number 1
Her thighs were a-pumpin
They brought me to the sun

All of a sudden
She cried outside
My Aphrodite
Fell to her side

All of a sudden

She cried outside
My Aphrodite
She died, she died, she died

aaaahhh

All of a sudden
She cried outside
My Aphrodite
Fell to her side
All of a sudden
She cried outside

My Aphrodite
She died she died she died

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Phèdre's song, "Aphrodite", tell a story of a person who is with a starling made of 300 karat gold, deep into the bay, where it would have been cold. The starling had 500 lovers, but the singer was number one. The starling's thighs were a-pumpin, and they brought the singer to the sun. Suddenly, the starling cried outside, and fell to her side. The singer's Aphrodite died.

The lyrics are full of symbolism and metaphor. The starling made of gold could represent wealth or value, while the bay could represent life's journey. The starling's lovers could represent competition or past relationships, and the singer being number one could represent triumph or superiority. The singer being brought to the sun could represent enlightenment or a higher place.

The sudden death of the singer's Aphrodite is a striking ending to the story, leaving the listener questioning the meaning behind it. Aphrodite was the Greek goddess of love, beauty, and fertility, so her death could represent the singer losing love or beauty in their life. Alternatively, it could represent the fleeting nature of happiness and beauty.

I totally want to have a crazy old people party like this when I get old. If I live long enough to the point that my body is brittle and my mind is slowed, then I'll throw a party like this. Pass around psychedelics and stimulants, and go nuts. And at that old age, if I die from partying too hard, I'll be happy, because I didn't die a slow, agonizing death to stagnation or cancer.
