Chloroform
Pheonix Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
They don't mind it if you're told where I'm from
Anyone I find intrusive
You will bother if you choose me
I don't always think of you
As untitled, insecure, chloroform
I would rather stand if you stay
My love, my love, my love, my love is
My love, my love, my love it is
My love, my love, my love, my love is
Cruel
Buckle up, we'll chase each other
It's not a lot, it's just enough to matter
Anyway you want the truth is
I will marry you on Tuesdays
I don't always tell the truth
If you want it you can lose, don't bother
I don't like it if you miss me
Why would I long for you?
My love, my love, my love, my love is
My love, my love, my love it is
My love, my love, my love, my love is
Cruel
My love, my love, my love, my love is
My love, my love, my love it is
My love, my love, my love, my love is
Cruel
Would I long for you?
Is it up to you, oh?
Is it up to you, oh?
Oh
Oh
The lyrics of Phoenix's song Chloroform explore the theme of love and its inherent complexities. The first stanza of the song showcases the singer's difficulty in being honest and authentic about their feelings. They admit that they don't always tell the truth and others only know where they are from if they are told. The second line highlights how the people around them are accepting of their tendencies to obscure the truth. The singer also mentions how they find intrusive people bothersome and doesn't think of the person they are addressing (possibly a lover) as untitled or insecure, but rather as someone who is potentially dangerous or overwhelming like the effect of chloroform.
The chorus of the song emphasizes the insidious nature of love, highlighting that the singer's love is cruel. They address their lover in the chorus, talking about the love they have for them, which is undoubtedly intense but, at the same time, harsh and bitter. The contrast between the intensity of their love and its underlying cruelty is what makes this song fascinating. The third stanza of the song traces the chase of love and how it's not easy or simple to obtain. The singer talks about marriage but only on Tuesdays, which can be interpreted as a remark of the futility of maintaining a relationship in the long run. The fourth stanza goes back to the theme of honesty, and the singer grapples with the discomforts of being missed by someone, leading them to question the reasons behind their longing.
Overall, Phoenix's Chloroform offers deeper insight into the complexities and contradictions of human emotions, especially those relating to love. The lyrics hint at the deceptive nature of love along with its ability to be both alluring and harmful at the same time.

Sofia Coppola is just a misunderstood genius. She knows how to create hypnotical images that suit the music perfectly, depicting so much understanding and sensibility.

Sofia did a really good job on making this music video. Every time you see your favorite band play right in front of you, don't you feel intoxicated? For me its like I'm intoxicated with Chloroform, but in a good way. There's just that feeling you don't understand, a great unexplainable feeling when you jam with your favorite band's song, sing their lyrics even when it's cryptic. You get blown away. For a moment it felt so surreal, then as the concert is about to end, reality fades in, that you only get to enjoy the feeling when they're playing. And when the concert ends, shit, back to reality.

This happened to me 3 years ago, I saw Phoenix in front of me, one of my favourites bands, the vibe was unique and out of the reality, couldn’t believe it at the moment, still missing this feeling, hope to see Phoenix again
