Rome
Pheonix Lyrics

Who's the boy you like the most?
Is he teasing you with underage?
Could he be waving from a tropical sunset?
Static silhouette somehow?
Single in his bed someday?
Quiet till it fall, fall, falls

Rome, Rome, Rome, Rome
Focus looking forward the Colosseum
Oh no, what did I say? What can I say?
Rome, Rome, many tears have fallen
Here I'll be driving, you look the other way

That ain't easy to ignore
When your shutters open all the way
When it's candlelight I see I go insane
Distant silhouette somehow
We shared a cigarette somewhere
Addict till it fall, fall, falls

Rome, Rome, Rome, Rome
Focus looking forward the Colosseum
Oh no, what did I say? What can I say?
Rome, Rome, many tears have fallen
Here I'll be driving, you look the other way

Rome, Rome, Rome, Rome
Rome, Rome, Rome, Rome
Rome, Rome, Rome, Rome
Rome, Rome, Rome, Rome
Rome, Rome, Rome, Rome
Rome, Rome, Rome, Rome

Always and forevermore
I call to say I'm on the way
2000 years remain in a trash can
Let burn the cigarette somewhere
Ashes till it fall, fall, falls

I stand outside under broken leaves
I know I can't do without
The future's trying to wait
I've never loved you
If I loved you
I wouldn't say that I'm sorry oh no
I stand outside under broken leaves

Always and forevermore
We're together dead and lonely
I thought I couldn't do this without you
Single in his bed somewhere
Ashes till it fall, fall, falls

Rome, Rome, Rome, Rome
Rome, Rome, Rome, Rome
Rome, Rome, Rome, Rome
"Oh no, what did I say?"
"What can I say?"
Rome, Rome, Rome, Rome

Rome, Rome, Rome, Rome
Rome, Rome, Rome, Rome

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Phoenix's song "Rome" capture the feeling of longing and nostalgia for an old flame. The song is about a person who is reflecting on their past relationship while also trying to move on. The first stanza describes the person's interest in someone new, but they are unsure if that person is too young, or if they are even interested at all. The reference to a tropical sunset and a static silhouette suggests that the person is trying to envision a future with this new potential love interest, but it is uncertain and appears distant. The second half of the stanza is about the person reflecting on their old relationship, wondering if their former partner is single and if they ever think about the past.

The chorus of the song is repetitive and captures the idea of wanting to escape and forget about past relationships and memories. The reference to the Colosseum, which is an ancient structure in Rome, may be a metaphor for trying to move on from the past and focus on things that are strong and unbreakable. However, the repetition of "many tears have fallen" in the chorus suggests that moving on is far from easy.

The second stanza is about the person's struggle to ignore the memories of their past relationship. The imagery of an open shutter and candlelight suggests that the person is haunted by vivid memories of their ex-partner. The reference to a shared cigarette is a poignant image of a past intimacy that is impossible to recapture. The stanza ends with the idea that addiction is hard to break, a reference to the addictive power of memory and nostalgia.

The final stanza seems to reflect on the hopelessness of the person's situation, suggesting that they will always be haunted by their past relationship, even in death. The reference to standing under broken leaves suggests a sense of decay and sadness. The repeated phrase "Rome, Rome, Rome" in the final chorus may be the person's attempt to remind themselves of their goal to move on, but the repetition also conveys a sense of desperation and hopelessness.

Overall, "Rome" is a poignant and heartfelt song about the struggle to move on from past relationships and memories.

How enjoy my youth??

@timberwolves85

I heard this version in my sixth floor walk up in Sugar Hill in upper Manhattan, Harlem, back in 2010. I was 25 years old then and thought my youth was gone. This song was a kind of lament for me.

The truth was I had years ahead of me. I left NYC shortly after for the American west, and pursued writing, art, teaching, new friendships, and new love. This song was a kind of nudge for me, and I never regretted it.
