Born and raised in west London, Collins played drums from the age of five and completed drama school training, which secured him various roles as a child actor, with his first major role, aged 13, as the Artful Dodger in the West End musical Oliver!. He then pursued a music career, joining Genesis in 1970 as their drummer and becoming lead singer in 1975 following the departure of Peter Gabriel. Collins began a successful solo career in the 1980s, initially inspired by his marital breakdown and love of soul music, releasing the albums Face Value (1981), Hello, I Must Be Going! (1982), No Jacket Required (1985) and ...But Seriously (1989). Collins became, in the words of AllMusic, "one of the most successful pop and adult contemporary singers of the '80s and beyond". He also became known for a distinctive gated reverb drum sound on many of his recordings. In 1985, he was the only artist to perform at both Live Aid concerts. He also resumed his acting career, appearing in Miami Vice and subsequently starring in the film Buster (1988). In 1996, Collins left Genesis to focus on solo work; this included writing songs for Disney's Tarzan (1999) for which he received an Oscar for Best Original Song for "You'll Be in My Heart". He rejoined Genesis for their Turn It On Again Tour in 2007. Following a five-year retirement to focus on his family life, Collins released an autobiography in 2016 and completed his Not Dead Yet Tour in 2019. He then rejoined Genesis in 2020 for a second reunion tour, ending in March 2022.
Collins's discography includes eight studio albums that have sold 33.5 million certified units in the US and an estimated 150 million records sold worldwide, making him one of the world's best-selling artists. He is one of only three recording artists, along with Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson, who have sold over 100 million records both as solo artists and separately as principal members of a band. He has won eight Grammy Awards, six Brit Awards (winning Best British Male Artist three times), two Golden Globe Awards, one Academy Award, and a Disney Legend Award. He was awarded six Ivor Novello Awards from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors, including the International Achievement Award. He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1999, and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2003 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Genesis in 2010. He has also been recognised by music publications with induction into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 2012, and the Classic Drummer Hall of Fame in 2013.

Do You Remember
Phil Collins Lyrics

But I hear the blame was mine
And I'd call you up to say I'm sorry
But I wouldn't wanna waste your time
'Cause I love you, but I can't take any more
There's a look I can't describe in your eyes
If we could try, like we tried before
Do you remember?
(Do you remember?)
Ooh, do you remember?
(Do you remember?)
There seemed no way to make up
'Cause it seemed your mind was set
Ooh, and the way you looked, it told me
It's a look I know I'll never forget
You could've come over to my side
You could've let me know
You could've tried to see the distance between us
But it seemed too far for you to go (so far to go)
Do you remember?
(Do you remember?)
Ooh, do you remember?
(Do you remember?)
Through all of my life
In spite of all the pain
You know, people are funny sometimes
They just can't wait to get hurt again
Tell me, do you remember?
(Do you remember?)
There are things we won't recall
And feelings we'll never find
It's taken so long to see it
'Cause we never seemed to have the time
There was always something more important to do
More important to say
But, "I love you" wasn't one of those things
And now it's too late (now it's too late) (now it's too late)
Do you remember? (Do you remember? Now it's over)
(Do you remember? Ooh, it's over)
Ooh, do you remember? (Do you remember? Now it's over)
(Do you remember? Ooh, it's over) ooh, yeah
Tell me, do you remember? (Do you remember? Now it's over)
Ooh, do you remember? (Do you remember? Ooh, it's over)
Tell me now, tell me now (Do you remember? Now it's over)
Tell me now, tell me now (Do you remember? Ooh, it's over)
Do you remember? (Do you remember? Now it's over)
(Do you remember? Ooh, it's over)
The lyrics of Phil Collins's song Do You Remember? depict a failed relationship, where the singer is remorseful about the way things have ended. He acknowledges the blame was his, but he never talked to his partner about it, leaving her with the wrong impression. He then regrets not calling her to apologize, but also realizes it might be too late to make amends. The chorus, "Do you remember?" is a call to his former partner, asking her if she remembers the good times they had together.
The second verse describes how the singer feels helpless in trying to patch things up because his former partner's mind was already made up. He could see the disappointment in her eyes, and no matter how much he wished for it, he knew they couldn't get back together. He then wonders if his partner remembers how much they loved each other before everything fell apart.
The final verse portrays regret about not making more time for his relationship. The singer wishes he had expressed his love more frequently, and tells listeners that it's never too late to say "I love you." However, in his case, it's now too late because the relationship has ended, as confirmed repeatedly in the chorus. Phil Collins's Do You Remember? is an emotional song about lost love, regret, and missed opportunities.

We never talked about it
We didn't discuss our problems
But I hear the blame was mine
I think I'm at fault for our issues
And I'd call you up to say I'm sorry
I wanted to apologize
But I wouldn't wanna waste your time
But I didn't want to inconvenience you
'Cause I love you, but I can't take any more
I still love you, but I can't handle the pain
There's a look I can't describe in your eyes
I see something unexplainable in your gaze
If we could try, like we tried before
If we attempted to fix things like we did in the past
Would you keep on tellin' me those lies? (Tellin' me lies)
Would you continue to deceive me?
Do you remember?
Do you recall our time together?
There seemed no way to make up
It seemed like we couldn't reconcile
'Cause it seemed your mind was set
Because it looked like you had made up your mind
Ooh, and the way you looked, it told me
And the expression on your face conveyed to me
It's a look I know I'll never forget
It's a look that is forever etched in my memory
You could've come over to my side
You could have seen my perspective
You could've let me know
You could've communicated with me
You could've tried to see the distance between us
You could have made an effort to bridge the gap between us
But it seemed too far for you to go (so far to go)
But it appeared like you weren't willing to make that effort
Through all of my life
Throughout my entire existence
In spite of all the pain
Despite all the hurt
You know, people are funny sometimes
People can be strange at times
They just can't wait to get hurt again
They seem to have a tendency to invite more pain into their lives
Tell me, do you remember?
Can you recall what happened between us?
There are things we won't recall
There are memories we've lost
And feelings we'll never find
And emotions we'll never rediscover
It's taken so long to see it
It has taken a while for me to realize
'Cause we never seemed to have the time
Because we never seemed to make time for each other
There was always something more important to do
There was always something that took priority
More important to say
More important things to express
But, "I love you" wasn't one of those things
But expressing love wasn't one of those priorities
And now it's too late (now it's too late) (now it's too late)
And now it's too late to fix our relationship
Do you remember? (Do you remember? Now it's over)
Do you recall what happened between us, now that it's over?
(Do you remember? Ooh, it's over)
(Do you remember? Oh, it's over)
Tell me, do you remember? (Do you remember? Now it's over)
Can you tell me if you have any memories of our time together, now that it's over?
Ooh, do you remember? (Do you remember? Ooh, it's over)
Oh, do you recall what happened between us, now that it's over?
Tell me now, tell me now (Do you remember? Now it's over)
Please answer me, answer me quickly
Tell me now, tell me now (Do you remember? Ooh, it's over)
Please answer me, answer me quickly
Do you remember? (Do you remember? Now it's over)
Do you remember what happened between us, now that our relationship has ended?
(Do you remember? Ooh, it's over)
(Do you remember? Oh, it's over)
