Born and raised in west London, Collins played drums from the age of five and completed drama school training, which secured him various roles as a child actor, with his first major role, aged 13, as the Artful Dodger in the West End musical Oliver!. He then pursued a music career, joining Genesis in 1970 as their drummer and becoming lead singer in 1975 following the departure of Peter Gabriel. Collins began a successful solo career in the 1980s, initially inspired by his marital breakdown and love of soul music, releasing the albums Face Value (1981), Hello, I Must Be Going! (1982), No Jacket Required (1985) and ...But Seriously (1989). Collins became, in the words of AllMusic, "one of the most successful pop and adult contemporary singers of the '80s and beyond". He also became known for a distinctive gated reverb drum sound on many of his recordings. In 1985, he was the only artist to perform at both Live Aid concerts. He also resumed his acting career, appearing in Miami Vice and subsequently starring in the film Buster (1988). In 1996, Collins left Genesis to focus on solo work; this included writing songs for Disney's Tarzan (1999) for which he received an Oscar for Best Original Song for "You'll Be in My Heart". He rejoined Genesis for their Turn It On Again Tour in 2007. Following a five-year retirement to focus on his family life, Collins released an autobiography in 2016 and completed his Not Dead Yet Tour in 2019. He then rejoined Genesis in 2020 for a second reunion tour, ending in March 2022.
Collins's discography includes eight studio albums that have sold 33.5 million certified units in the US and an estimated 150 million records sold worldwide, making him one of the world's best-selling artists. He is one of only three recording artists, along with Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson, who have sold over 100 million records both as solo artists and separately as principal members of a band. He has won eight Grammy Awards, six Brit Awards (winning Best British Male Artist three times), two Golden Globe Awards, one Academy Award, and a Disney Legend Award. He was awarded six Ivor Novello Awards from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors, including the International Achievement Award. He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1999, and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2003 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Genesis in 2010. He has also been recognised by music publications with induction into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 2012, and the Classic Drummer Hall of Fame in 2013.

Phil Collins Lyrics

But I hear the blame was mine
I'd call you up to say I'm sorry
But I wouldn't want to waste your time
'Cause I love you, but I can't take any more
There's a look I can't describe in your eyes
If we could try, like we tried before
(Telling me lies)
Do you remember?
There seemed no way to make up
'Cause it seemed your mind was set
And the way you looked it told me
It's a look I know I'll never forget
You could've come over to my side
You could've let me know
You could've tried to see the distance between us
But it seemed too far for you to go.
(So far to go)
Do you remember?
Through all of my life
In spite of all the pain
You know people are funny sometimes
'Cause they just can't wait
To get hurt again
Tell me, do you remember?
Do you remember?
There are things we won't recall
And feelings we'll never find
It's taken so long to see it
'Cause we never seemed to have the time
There was always something more important to do
More important to say
But "I love you" wasn't one of those things
And now it's too late
Do you remember?
(Now it's over)
Do you remember?
(Now it's over)
The song "Do You Remember?" by Phil Collins appears to be about a relationship that has ended and the nostalgia that comes with the end of a relationship. While the singer of the song remains apologetic about his role in the breakup, he also expresses his love for his partner but recognizes that the relationship has reached its limit. As he looks back on their time together, he remembers the moments when the distance between them grew and how it seemed inevitable that they would end up apart.
The chorus of the song, with its repeated question of "Do you remember?", acts as a lament for the things that were left unsaid and undone in the relationship. There is a sense of regret for the lost moments and missed chances that they can never get back. The final lines of the song, "Now it's over," emphasize the finality of the end of the relationship and the impossibility of going back to what they once had.
Overall, "Do You Remember?" is a poignant and reflective song about love and loss, regret and nostalgia. Despite its sad tone, the song shows a willingness to learn from past mistakes and move forward.

It's an expression that is etched in my memory forever
You could've come over to my side
You had the option to see things from my perspective

Because we were always too busy to focus on our relationship
There was always something more important to do
Something always seemed to take priority over our relationship
More important to say
There were always other things that we felt we needed to communicate about
But "I love you" wasn't one of those things
But expressing our love to each other was not a priority for us

(Our relationship has ended)
Do you remember?
Do you recall the good times we had together?
