Uptight
Phil Collins Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Baby, everything is all right, uptight, out of sight.
Baby, everything is all right, uptight, out of sight.

I'm a poorman's son, from across the railroad tracks,
The only shirt I own is hangin' on my back,
But I'm the envy of every single guy
Since I'm the apple of my girl's eye.
When we go out stepping on the town for a while
My money's low and my suit's out of style,
But it's all right if my clothes aren't new
Out of sight because my heart is true.

She says baby everything is alright, uptight, out of sight.
Baby, everything is alright, uptight, clean out of sight.

She's a pearl of a girl, I guess that's what you might say,
I guess her folks brought her up that way,
The right side of the tracks, she was born and raised
In a great big old house, full of butlers and maids.
She says no one is better than I, I know I'm just an average guy,
No football hero or smooth Don Juan,
Got empty pockets, you see I'm a poorman's son.
She says give her the things that money can buy
But I'll never, never make my baby cry,

'Cause it's all right, what I can't do,
Out of sight because my heart is true,
She says baby everything is alright, uptight, out of sight.
Baby, everything is alright, uptight, clean out of sight.
Baby, everything is alright, uptight, ah ah ah ah,
Baby, everything is alright, uptight, clean out of sight.

Baby, everything is alright, uptight, clean out of sight.
Baby, everything is alright, uptight, out of sight.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Phil Collins's song "Uptight" tell a story of two lovers who come from different backgrounds but are deeply in love. The male protagonist, who is poor and doesn't have many possessions, is grateful for the love of his partner, who is rich and comes from a privileged background. The chorus of the song serves as encouragement to the lovers, with the repeated refrain "Baby, everything is all right, uptight, out of sight" conveying the message that love conquers all obstacles.

The opening lines of the song, "Baby, everything is all right, uptight, out of sight," set the tone for the positive and upbeat nature of the song. The use of the word "uptight" here conveys not a sense of anxiety but rather a feeling of excitement and energy, indicating that the couple is ready to face any challenge that comes their way. The lyrics go on to describe the male protagonist's humble background, referencing the fact that he is the "poorman's son" from across the railroad tracks.

As the song progresses, we get a glimpse into the female protagonist's perspective. She recognizes that her partner doesn't have much money or material possessions, but she values him for who he is, not what he can give her. She tells him, "Give her the things that money can buy, but I'll never, never make my baby cry." This line emphasizes the importance of love and emotional connection over material things.

UPTIGHT GREAT SONG IN CONCERT BY PHIL COLLINS !!!

frk75

Upbeat, the kind of music that put a smile on your face....and yet, Collins at the time had a drinking problem, big problem, and I just read an interview with Chester Thompson in rolling stone magazine, there was a real tension between him and Thompson while this short tour went on. Phil dose'nt make any eye contact with his old buddy Chester, very unusual. Apparently he only did when Thompson was playing something wrong. It's the end of a happy time between two rythm brothers, so sad
