Miles Away
Phil Cook Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I was miles away
I was miles away
I know I'm next to you, babe
But I was miles away
What did ya say?
What did ya say?
I wasn't listenin', babe
Tell me, what did ya say?
I know you waited (when'll you come back home?)
Where I wanna be (you've been away so long)
I know you're ready (I'm always on my own)
You know I wanna be
Driftin' away
You're always driftin' away
Driftin' away
Girl, I'm callin' your name
But you keep driftin' away
Ain't it a shame?
Ain't it a shame?
Ain't it a shame?
The way I kiss your face
And yet we're miles away
I'm out here waitin' (when'll you come back home?)
Where could you be? (I been away too long)
You're always runnin' (you're always on your own)
Come stand by me
Where was I goin'?
Where have I gone?
Where did I get to?
Left the light turned on
I didn't mean to
I wanted to stay
But I just wandered
Miles away
Miles away
I was miles away
I was miles away
Though I was next to you, baby
I was miles away
I'm out here waitin' (when'll you come back home?)
Where could you be? (I been away too long)
You're always runnin' (you're always on your own)
Come stand by me
I'm out here waitin' (when'll you come back home?)
Where could you be? (I been away too long)
You're always runnin' (you're always on your own)
Come stand by me (I been away too long)
I'm out here waitin' (when'll you come back home?)
Where could you be? (I been away too long)
You're always runnin' (you're always on your own)
Come stand by me (I been away too long)
I'm out here waitin' (when'll you come back home?)
Where could you be? (I been away too long)
You're always runnin' (you're always on your own)
Come stand by me (I been away too long)
I'm out here waitin' (when'll you come back home?)
Where could you be? (I been away too long)
You're always runnin' (you're always on your own)
Come stand by me (I been away too long)
In Phil Cook's song "Miles Away," the singer describes his emotional distance from his partner despite being physically close to them. The singer repeats the phrase "miles away" throughout the song, emphasizing the emotional chasm between him and his partner. Despite being next to his partner, he feels detached and disconnected. The singer admits to not listening to his partner and asks them to repeat what they said. He acknowledges that they have been waiting for him to return and that he wants to be with them, but he is always drifting away. He is aware of the shame of the situation: he kisses his partner but still feels miles away from them. The singer is left wondering where he is going and where he went wrong, as he never meant to wander away from his partner.
The song evokes the themes of emotional distance, miscommunication, and longing for connection. The repetition of "miles away" draws attention to the emotional gulf between the singer and his partner. The song suggests that sometimes, even when we are physically close to someone, we can feel far from them emotionally. We may have difficulty listening and connecting with them, which can cause us to drift away from them.

Just heard this song on WUNC. I can't believe it's been out for so long and I'd never heard it. Great song, and Amelia's voice is always just so lovely and recognizable. An awesome find, just like her collaboration with Flock of Dimes.
