Many years ago at school I made myself look such a fool
I did something that made me a laughing stock among my peers when I was in school, and it is still fresh in my memory after all these years.

My action was so ridiculous that everybody who saw me doing it laughed uncontrollably.

I said that I would marry her, that pretty girl in the lower year
I made a claim that I would marry a very attractive girl who was in a lower class than mine in school.

My peers could not believe the absurdity of my claim and found it hilarious.

She wondered what the fuss was all about
The girl I had claimed I would marry was perplexed by the attention and commotion surrounding me.

And because she could not work it out
She was unable to figure out why I was making such a grandiose claim about her.

I wrote a letter on a page
To convey my true intentions to the girl I wrote a letter on a piece of paper.

And put it in her bag one day
I sneaked the letter into her bag in order to surprise her and make her aware of my feelings for her.

And a voice said
At this point, a voice made a statement which I could hear but the girl could not.

Everybody's laughing because it's you I'm asking
The voice highlighted that everyone was laughing at me because I was planning to ask her out.

They don't feel that my chances are high
The voice made it clear that people did not think I had any chance with her because she was so attractive.

They say that I don't have what it takes to make you love me
The voice revealed that many people believed that I lacked the qualities required to capture her heart.

All the same I just have to try
Despite being aware of the odds against me, I was determined to pursue her and win her heart.

Then it came, I had my chance to talk to her at the local dance
I eventually got an opportunity to talk to her during a local dance event.

Everybody laughed (Everybody laughed)
However, everyone present at the dance found the situation funny and laughed at me.

'Cause all the local Romeo's were trying to put on a show for her eyes
This was because I had competition from other guys present at the event who were also trying to impress her.

She wondered what the fuss was all about
Again, the girl was bewildered by the attention and fuss surrounding her, particularly since she did not ask for it.

And because she could not work it out
She was unable to understand why I and other guys were seeking her attention at the moment.

I had to let know her there
I took it upon myself to let her know why I was particularly interested in being around her.

And so I whispered in her ear
In order to have a candid moment with her alone, I leaned in close and whispered something to her.

She said she'd already made up her mind
Upon hearing what I had to say, she informed me that she had already decided on something.

To forget about all those old, old-fashioned seat abides
To overlook traditional social conventions and be open to newer ways of relating with people.

But she waited 'till the laughter all subsides
Despite the noise and chaos surrounding her, she was able to patiently wait for things to quiet down before making her decision.

And tell that awful crowd that she'll be mine
After things had calmed down, she made it clear to those present that she was willing to be in a relationship with me.

Well, everybody's laughing because it's you I'm asking
Despite her decision, people continued to laugh at me because I was the least attractive of all the guys she had as options.

Once again, the fact that I was the least attractive guy pursuing her was the reason why people found it amusing that I had been chosen.

They don't feel that my chances are high
Despite her decision, people still believed that I did not stand a chance with her in the long run.

They say that I don't have what it takes to make you love me
People still held negative views about my prospects of being able to maintain a relationship with her.

All the same I just have to try
Despite the odds being against me, I was determined to make things work with her and prove doubters wrong.

Everybody's laughing because it's you I'm asking
A repetition of the fact that people still found it amusing that I had been able to win her affection despite the circumstances.
