Out of the Blue
Phil Manzanera Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

All you cares
Now they seem
Oh so far away
All your fears
I fear I once shared
Now I know

There's a future
For all of us
Not so long ago
I was so scared
You seemed so sad
I could see

Through your twisted smile
So unsure
Always confused
Pale blue eyes
Gazing down
From your ivory tower
Through the haze

All broken and bruised
Then: out of the blue
Love came rushing in
Out of the sky
Came the sun
Out of left field
Came a lucky day
Out of the blue
No more pain
I don't mind
If it's only
A passing craze
Throwaway lines
Often ring true
If I were you

I would stay
For a little while
I you were me

Would you walk out
In style?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Phil Manzanera's song "Out of the Blue" initially express a sense of distance and disconnection from cares and fears that once seemed all-consuming. The singer of the song acknowledges that they once shared the fears of someone close to them, but now recognizes the potential for a brighter future, one that perhaps seemed unlikely not long ago. The person they are addressing appeared to be struggling, with a twisted smile and uncertain demeanor, gazing down from an ivory tower that now seems broken and bruised.

However, suddenly and unexpectedly, love arrives, represented by the metaphor of the sun coming out of the sky, a lucky day from left field, and the pain disappearing out of the blue. Though the singer acknowledges that this love could be a passing craze or throwaway line, they suggest staying for a little while longer and walking out in style. The overarching theme of the song seems to be the cyclic nature of life, with its ups and downs and moments of unexpected joy.

Never heard this before - more available from the same gig? Fantastic band đŸ˜‰

Crimson Wolf

Absolutely terrific..... well, except that Bryan Ferry is sorely missed on vocals. Irreplaceable.

I was at an 801 concert in Manchester (University Building) around this time, so assume it was this one. Being a small venue, I was able to see the group carrying out sound checks prior to the concert (while most other punters were in the bar). Great concert and as said Andy Mackay was on Sax and from memory it must have been the great Paul Thompson on drums (as on other Phil Manzanera albums).

Yes this sounds like the concert at the University of Manchester Union, I was there too.

The CD is hard to find, I have it.
