Sea Of Love
Phil Phillips Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Come with me, my love
To the sea, the sea of love
I want to tell you how much I love you

Do you remember when we met?
That's the day I knew you were my pet
I want to tell you how much I love you
Come with me to the sea
Oh, love

Do you remember when we met?
That's the day I knew you were my pet
I want to tell you how much I love you

Come with me to the sea
Oh, love

Do you remember when we met?

That's the day I knew you were my pet
I want to tell you how much I love you

Overall Meaning

The song "Sea of Love" is a classic love song that is all about expressing the depth of one's love. The song encourages the listener's love interest to come with him or her to the "sea of love" so that they can both be immersed in the intensity of their love. The song begins with a simple but powerful line, "Come with me, my love, to the sea, the sea of love" which sets the tone for the rest of the song.

The second stanza of the song reminisces about the day the couple first met, as this was significant in the singer's realization that his love interest was meant to be his "pet". The lyrics imply a sense of ownership over the person he or she loves, but in a positive and affectionate way. The repetition of this stanza throughout the song emphasizes the importance of this significant day and the realization of their love for each other.

Overall, the song is about finding true love and the importance of embracing it. The "sea of love" is a metaphor for this all-consuming feeling, and the singer aims to give words to the emotion so that his love interest can fully understand the depth of his love.

I was in junior high when this song came out. Dated a girl when I was home on leave from the Army in 1966, 25 years later we met again, and we had this song played as our wedding dance 27 years ago.

Old times, good times, good music, good lyrics, not today's garbage. Lovely song, nothing but the original of Phil Phillips

I was born in 85 but my dad was born in 42. This was one of his favorite songs and he’d play it in the car everywhere we went. It quickly became one of my favorites as well. He passed away less than a year ago from cancer but listening to all our 1950s/1960s riding jams makes me feel close to him. Miss you daddy.

Music does do that to ya. A song can bring us to the first time we heard it. This song will be added to my performing song list of early rock n roll.
