Noo there are better ones. Mimi and Rodolfo's, Butterfly and Pinkerton's but this one is beautiful in its own way

Wonderful in one word! Greetings from Turkey...

I just saw the new MET production yesterday, and I must say this "amateur" one is still head and shoulders above. In this particular duetto, Tamagna and Ballman achieve such an amazing chemistry and manage to create a fascinating sense of intimacy that's completely lacking in McDermott's version. And the orchestra is also so carefully balanced and actually MAKING MUSIC along with the singers, not just playing the notes underneath. An amazing feat.

Anthony Clark

I too saw the Met production, just Saturday, relayed to Europe in my local cinema. Previously I knew the work through the recording conducted by Russell and the few video extracts online. I found the Met production musically less exciting and visually ultra distracting.

Joe Mancini

Going to see it in the cinema Wednesday evening. Sorry to hear it is a disappointment. Reviews in the Times and Post were positive.

@Joe Mancini It's just an opinion. There's still much to be liked in McDermott's production, if his style is up your alley. It didn't really work for me because I wasn't sold on the juggling thing, and generally found the visuals way too distracting too. Also, I felt the music could have been more nuanced, but it could be just me being too attached to the Dennis Russell recording. I've only seen the MET version once.

Joe Mancini

Dion Baillargeon I have to say I got on board with McDermott. The “brownian motion” created by the jugglers created a visual analog to the endless patterns and repetitions in the music. My final take on this is that this will become the “definitive” realization, certainly Glass feels that way. I may not consider Glass a great composer, but he is a great opera composer, the most consequential American opera composer, I dare say.
