Angels from the Realms of Glory
Philip Ledger King's College Choir Cambridge Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Angels from the realms of glory,
Wing your flight o'er all the earth;
Ye who sang creation's story,
Now proclaim Messiah's birth:
Come and worship,
Come and worship,
Worship Christ, the newborn King!
Shepherds, in the fields abiding,
Watching o'er your flocks by night,
God with man is now residing,
Yonder shines the infant Light;
Come and worship,
Come and worship,
Worship Christ, the newborn King!

Sages, leave your contemplations,
Brighter visions beam afar;
Seek the great desire of nations,
Ye have seen His natal star;
Come and worship,
Come and worship,
Worship Christ, the newborn King!

Saints before the altar bending,
Watching long in hope and fear,
Suddenly the Lord, descending,
In His temple shall appear:
Come and worship,

Come and worship,
Worship Christ, the newborn King!

Overall Meaning

The song "Angels from the realms of glory" by Philip Ledger King's College Choir Cambridge is a hymn that celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ. The first stanza talks about the angels who spread the news about the birth of Christ to the whole earth. The angels who sang during the creation of the world now proclaim the arrival of the Messiah in Bethlehem. The second stanza addresses the shepherds who were watching over their sheep at night. The hymn reminds the shepherds that God now dwells among the men and that the infant light shines where Christ was born. The third stanza addresses the wise men who are called sages in the hymn. They are urged to leave their contemplation and follow the star to the place where the newborn king is born. The final stanza speaks of the saints who have spent their lives waiting in hope and fear for the coming of the Lord. In the end, Christ will appear, and the worshipper is invited to worship the newborn king.

excellent - I'm having a great Christmas after party watching this

I like this brisk tempo (conducted two in a bar); it suits this choir because of their collective skill, as well as the choral arrangement. For, perhaps, the average church choir and congregation, it would be too fast to sing. Kings College Cambridge were singing this piece in the video as a 'performance', without congregational/audience participation, so the quick tempo works technically, yet still preserves the piece musically.
