That Would Be Enough
Phillipa Soo Lyrics

...
Look around, look around at how lucky we are
to be alive right now.
Look around, look around…
How long have you known?
A month or so.
Eliza, you should have told me.
I wrote to the General a month ago.
No.
I begged him to send you home.
You should have told me.
I'm not sorry.
I knew you'd fight
until the war was won
(The war's not done.)
But you deserve a chance to meet your son.
Look around, look around
at how lucky we are to be alive
right now.
Will you relish being a poor man's wife,
unable to provide for your life?
I relish being your wife.
Look around, look around…
Look at where you are
Look at where you started.
The fact that you're alive is a miracle.
Just stay alive, that would be enough.
And if this child
Shares a fraction of your smile
or a fragment of your mind,
look out world!
That would be enough.
I don't pretend to know
the challenges you're facing.
The worlds you keep erasing and creating in your mind.
But I'm not afraid.
I know who I married.
So long as you come home at the end of the day
that would be enough.
We don't need a legacy.
We don't need money.
If I could grant you peace of mind,
If you could let me inside your heart...
Oh, let me be a part of the narrative
in the story they will write someday.
Let this moment be the first chapter:
where you decide to stay
and I could be enough
and we could be enough

that would be enough.

Overall Meaning

In Lin-Manuel Miranda's song "That Would Be Enough," Eliza and Alexander Hamilton have a conversation about their future together. Eliza has just told Alexander that she is pregnant with their first child, and Alexander is worried about their finances and ability to provide for their growing family. Despite his concerns, Eliza reaffirms her love and devotion to him, insisting that their happiness together is all that truly matters.

As the song progresses, the lyrics draw attention to the importance of appreciating the present moment and being grateful for what one has. The line "look around, look around at how lucky we are to be alive right now" emphasizes the fleeting nature of life and encourages listeners to savor every moment. The song ends with the hope that their love will be enough to sustain them through the challenges they will inevitably face in the future.

Overall, "That Would Be Enough" is a poignant reminder of the power of love and the importance of appreciating the present moment. It emphasizes the idea that in order to find true happiness, we need to focus on what really matters in life: connection, intimacy, and the ability to appreciate the beauty in small moments.

I cant stop watching 20 to 60 seconds......
There is simply too much happening in those 40 seconds to fathom human thought without my heart ACHING!
DID THE GENERAL TELL HIM SHE WAS PREGNANT? OR DID HE JUST LEARN SEEING HER BELLY?
EITHER WAY, ITS SO DAMN BEAUTIFUL. THEIR ACTING is simply phenomenal. I literally keep reqinding. And getting repeated chills and feels of this scene!

Stares at her belly in AWE.
"How long have you known?"
"A month or so"
The way he looks at her. "Eliza. You should have told me..."
"I wrote to the general a month ago."
"NO!" He says, so angry that the general 1, didn't tell him, but two. That maybe that's why the general sent him home?
Maybe he doesn't know how to feel.......
"I begged him to send you home..."
"You should have TOLD me."

"I knew you'd fight until the war was won."
"The wars not done."
"But you deserve a chance to meet you son."

Do you relish being a poor man's wife unable to provide for your life?"

"I relish being your wife".
And then ALEXANDERS FREAKING FACE IS EVERYTHING!

THEIR EMOTING AND ACTING IS SO RAW AND REAL AND AMAZING.
I CANT.
Incredible actors.... simply INCREDIBLE.

@flower-rp2sq

Imagine this:

A 11 year old girl with short brown hair and hazel eyes, about to go to bed and wake up for school the next morning, watching "That would be enough" at 11:00 at night crying at 1:09 when Alexanders face changed.

Yeah that girl was me

Eliza spent a majority of her life telling her husband’s story she forgot to tell her own. Until Lin told it for her

Fun fact: Eliza’s orphanage is in Washington Heights, where In The Heights took place

@robin.jashinsky

So is a school she opened.....also located in Washington Heights.

@MsSonnencreme

An amazingly strong and kind woman

@moons4willow

The orphanage is still up and running today! It’s called the Graham orphanage I think.

@LianneAngela

@@moons4willow grandham windham orphanage!

@paulm.7420

The orphanage is not in Washington Heights.

@GhettoBagel

It is INSANE how fantastic Phillipa Soo is as Eliza Hamilton. In all of her live performances, she sounds EXACTLY like she does on the studio album, her singing is truly next level.

@jackalexande

Her and Burr are the stars of the show in my opinion

@danumd87

In a show where everyone is elite, she still stands out heads and shoulders above the rest of the cast.

@danumd87

@@jackalexandeBurr is good but he has a couple of songs where they try to expand his range beyond what he does well and the songs really suffer as a result (by “really suffer” I mean within the context of one of the greatest shows of all time with hit after hit…such that a couple of what I’d call Burr’s B level performances seem worse when viewed in the light of an otherwise historically fantastic show)
