The band is known for musical improvisation, extended jams, blending of genres, and a rigorous touring schedule that draws a famously dedicated fan base. Their music blends elements of a wide variety of genres, including funk, progressive rock, psychedelic rock, folk, country, jazz, blues, bluegrass, and pop. Phish were part of a movement of improvisational rock groups, inspired by the Grateful Dead and colloquially known as "jam bands", which gained considerable popularity as touring concert acts in the 1990s.
After 15 years of performing together, Phish went on hiatus in 2000. They resumed touring in December 2002, but disbanded in 2004 after a farewell performance at their Coventry Festival in Vermont. They reunited in March 2009 for a series of three consecutive concerts played in the Hampton Coliseum in Hampton, Virginia, and have since resumed performing regularly.
Although the group received little radio play or MTV exposure, Phish developed a large following by word of mouth during the 1990s, particularly through fan-record tapes of their concerts, which circulated for free online with the band's permission. While often compared to the Grateful Dead, Phish finds their roots in styles such as jazz, funk and alternative rock as opposed to the Dead, who were more influenced by folk, country and blues.
Each Phish concert is different in terms of the songs included and the order in which they appeared, and (for many songs) in the way in which they were performed. Also unique to Phish are their large summer festivals which draw upwards of 70K people to remote areas in Maine and New York State as well as close to 100K for their epic Millennium Show in the Everglades of South Florida.
Along with Bob Dylan and The Beatles, Phish were one of the first bands to have an Internet newsgroup - rec.music.phish - launched in 1991.
In regards to Phish, Rolling Stone magazine proclaimed "Given their sense of community, their ambition and their challenging, generous performances, Phish have become the most important band of the Nineties."
Love You
Phish Lyrics

Love ya more funny love in the skyline baby
Ice cream 'scuse me I seen ya looking good the other evenin'.
Oh, you dig it had to smile just an hour
so if we're in love like I think we'll be
It ain't a long rhyme it took ages to think
I think I'll hurl it in the water baby.
Thinkin you are a nice little one
to put it all around you it's just good
I like it
I like it.
Hey Hey Hey suppose sometime that day
you won't be swingin along over across to me.
(chorus)
Good time rocker woman,
we'll stray our pieces
little creepy we shine so sleepy so whoopie!
That's how you look.
The lyrics of Phish's song Love You are somewhat cryptic that require careful analysis. The song talks about the deep feelings of love with a hint of silliness and whimsy. The opening lines "Honey, love ya honey little honey bunny Sunday mornin'" suggest a feeling of endearment and affection towards a loved one, someone who is cherished and adored. The phrase "Love ya more funny love in the skyline baby" amplifies the sentiment of the love and a sense of playfulness that comes with it. The lines "Ice cream 'scuse me I seen ya looking good the other evenin'" suggests a non-serious, playful conversational style that suggests a relaxed and lighthearted relationship between two people.
The song takes a turn towards the weird and quirky, "Oh, you dig it had to smile just an hour so if we're in love like I think we'll be It ain't a long rhyme it took ages to think I think I'll hurl it in the water baby", the lyrics don't make much sense at face value but could be interpreted as the state of mind of someone utterly in love and wanting to express their feelings in a unique way. The chorus "Thinkin you are a nice little one to put it all around you it's just good I like it" continues with the same whimsy and reinforces that the person is happy with the way things are, and the situation is enjoyable. The line "Hey Hey Hey suppose sometime that day you won't be swinging along over across to me" could suggest that the future of the relationship is uncertain, but it does not concern the person singing the song.
The song adopts a surreal, abstract tone towards the end with the lines "Good time rocker woman, we'll stray our pieces little creepy we shine so sleepy, so whoopie! That's how you look." The lyrics suggest a dreamlike, surreal state, which is in line with many of Phish's other songs. The lyrics may seem like a nonsensical rambling, but they add to the overall whimsical feel of the song.
