Before recording under the name Phosphorescent, Houck traveled the world playing under the moniker Fillup Shack and, in 2000, self-released a limited pressing of the album "Hipolit". In 2001 Houck changed his recording name to Phosphorescent, and, in 2003, released the full-length album "A Hundred Times or More". Interestingly, in the liner notes of the album, Fillup Shack is credited with the drum recordings. The following year, he released the EP "The Weight of Flight".
Phosphorescent rose to wider critical acclaim after releasing "Aw Come Aw Wry" in August 2005 and "Pride" in October 2007. The latter was named the 12th best album of 2007 by Stylus Magazine and received a 8.0 rating from indie website Pitchfork Media. In 2009, inspired by Willie Nelson's tribute album to Lefty Frizzell entitled "To Lefty From Willie", Houck crafted a tribute album to Nelson himself entitled "To Willie" which was released through Dead Oceans. Phosphorescent released "Here's to Taking It Easy" in 2010 and "Muchacho" in 2013.

And I been gone so awful long
But babe you know there ain't nothing wrong
And you know I'll be here soon
The road is long and the road does wind
I'm bound to leave some parts behind
But don't you pay that any mind
I'll be here soon
So lay your ass out on the floor
And raise your glass and raise it more
And praise and laugh and praise some more
And you know
We'll be here soon
Now dry your eyes in the setting sun
I know the pressure's on and ain't nothin' fun
And babe you know it's all been done
But you know
It ain't been too
So get yourself and bring her here
And fix yourself up in the mirror
We'll fix ourselves another beer
And you know
We'll be here soon
And lay your ass out on the floor
And raise your glass and raise it more
We'll praise and laugh and praise some more
And we will know
We will be here soon
In Phosphorescent's song We'll Be Here Soon, the lyrics depict a story of a person who has been away for a long time, possibly on a journey or tour, and is reassuring their loved one that they'll be reunited soon. The singer acknowledges that they've been gone for a while, but emphasizes that there's nothing wrong with their relationship and that they'll return soon enough. The opening lines "I know I'm back with just a song, And I've been gone so awful long, But babe, you know there ain't nothing wrong, And you know I'll be here soon" convey a nostalgic, upbeat feeling and gives one a sense of anticipation and hope.
The road metaphor may portray life's journey which comes along with its own setbacks, but the singer asks the loved one not to worry, as he/she will be there soon. The verse "The road is long and the road does wind, I'm bound to leave some parts behind, But don't you pay that any mind, 'Cause you know, I'll be here soon" suggests that some things get left behind, but what matters is the reunion and the present moment.
The chorus "So lay your ass out on the floor, And raise your glass and raise it more, And praise and laugh and praise some more, And you know, We'll be here soon" indicates that we should enjoy the present moment and anticipate the pending reunion. The song also seems to highlight the importance of companionship, and how it can be celebrated through moments of laughter, love, and appreciation. The lyrics carry a message of hope, optimism, and the importance of staying connected with people that mean the most to us.
